Plea for help to source front struts

Hi can anyone help I am trying to source front struts for my 1991 sportline cabriolet. I have new inserts and springs but require the outer sleeves. Thanks

So if I read this correct you usually re-use the outer strut  tubes.  So if the outers is what you are looking for then you may have to source them at a breakers.

What I have found over the years of Rabbit/Cabriolet ownership is that the struts only get damaged by stripping the internal or external threads, and or by being kinked.

As if yours are original then they have the fluid filled cartridges, that you remove then insert the cartridges in to them (you also want to add a little ATF it the cartridge to assist in heat dissipation.

The other part of the equation is that you have to keep the weep holes on the lower spring perch free of debris so water will drain off the strut perch.

How I do the strut replacement.

Ebay and classifieds are a good place to look for hte bare cartridges, there were some places that sell one time use, which means that you can rebuild them.

Bilstiens had a set that you could re-cartridge, and there are coil over kits that you can buy to get the strut tube.

Brush them with a wire brush to gauge the depth of the corrosion, then primer and Spray….
I mean they are steel, and a pretty thick steel at that.

If the perch's aren't rotted out, they should be good to go.  I mean I have never had to replace a strut tube, cartridges yes tubes no, and I have had both the internal thread and the external thread.  When mine looked like garbage on my 81, a wire wheel on my drill, primer, and 3 coats of Poly sating black they looked better than new.

What Briano1234 said, a good rub down and a few  coats of paint makes the world of difference.
Most ones you can buy from shops are 2nd hand and have been blasted then powder coated so might be worth getting yours done?

I had this issue recently. I went from coilovers back to shocks and springs but needed outer sleeves and spring caps

Got a full set of knackered fronts for £30

Blasted and powder coated in black for £60

Not a cheap affair but you'll never have to do it again

But then you need the inserts,  assuming bilstein,  aroung £60,  think you can still get brand new complete bilstein struts for a little over £150 the pair..
