Fitted Accuspark and car wont start !

Post

Car is -83 1.6. So i fitted Accuspark but cant get car running. So heres how it all went  down :

-First i fitted new 3.0 Ohm standard coil to replace old 1.5 Ohm ballast coil.  I didnt use resistor wire, instead I made all new wire from the back of the fusebox. First I fitted it to G01 (new style fusebox) - i measured that its ignition switched +12V.  After that i fitted it into D15 witch is lead for that resistor wire, that is now plugged and hanging in the bay.

-Here is all wires that goes into coil right now :
+ 15 side :
1. Brown wire . I suppose this is 12V from starter while turning key.
2. Red wire. This is ignition switched 12V i pulld from fusebox.
3. Red wire. This is from Accuspark red wire.
4. Black wire. My wire for volt gauge.

- 1 side :
1. Green wire. Goes to Accuspark's black wire.
2. Red/black wire. This is for tacho ?

Double checked everything couple of times and there shoudnt be problems with wires. Right ?

-Before I removed dizzy from engine I scraped small marks so after reinstall dizzy should be aligned or atleast close enought to start.

-After I fitted Accuspark unit and magnet trigger ring I noticed that I have to sand rotor abit so it sits in the groove. I measured that I didnt sand too much and rotor still should hit contacts on the cap.

-Also I ordered spare trigger ring and tried that one also without any luck.

When I first tried to start car, it turns but wont start. Tried second time right after and heard REALLY loud bang.
No smoke or anything and didnt see anything wrong.

Later same thing happened. First start, no luck. Second start right after, BANG.

After that second bang whenever i tried to start i only turned key once, even if i tryed to start it for long time i didnt get any loud sounds.

Sorry for long post, but Im totally lost what could be wrong. Only thing i can think of anymore is faulty coil or accuspark unit.
Im prob gonna try it with original ballast coil and with that resistor wire tomorrow..

Hmmmm not too sure.

Is it carb or injection?

The bang could be back fire through the carb, which could be timing out.

Also, are the plug leads definitely back on the dizzy in the right order? I've done that before when you're sure you've done it right and they're wrong order.

It is carb. And im pretty sure leads are in correct order, only removed cap while leads still connected and if I were to put cap 180 degrees the wrong way my leads are that short, that they would look all awkward...

Are you getting a spark to all the plugs?

I reckon your timing is out.

Which type fuse box do you have, one with blade fuses or bullet type fuses?

I fitted an Accuspark kit to my 1978 Mk1 Scirocco, I used the original coil (ballast type).

Have a read of how I fitted mine, I did have to tweak the timing a little to get it to run.

edit… The link seems to go half way through the thread, scroll up and you can read how and to what I fitted mine, with lots of help from rubjonny I got there in the end.

The Accuspark kit is good and I did notice the difference in a smoother tick over and smoother higher up the rev range, my kits been on the car a few years now and it's still work fine.
Keep at it as it will be worth it in the end as not more buying condensers and points every years then adjusting points gap. :thumbs:The the hardest thing I found was finding a 12 v feed to the Accuspark that would stay live when cranking over then engine as a lot of them go dead when the starter is turning.
