Factory tinted glass - please help!

Hi all

I have x2 Golfs and am making one great one (the red one). The Donor car (blue one) has factory green tinted glass and the main car (red one) has clear glass. The red one will be getting a new roof and although I had thought of taking the Mohair (electric) roof off the blue one (with the tinted rear glass) it would not be age fitting (the red one is 1980) and they didn't have electric roofs then.

My questions are this. The red one has opening front quarter glass. Is that glass the same size as the blue one (non-opening). When I look online (US) the quarters seem to have a darker green tint. While I can swap all the glass from the blue one I don't want to find the front quarters don't fit, I order from the states and find they are different colour.

No the Glass sizes are different.
The Fixed Glass ones are taller.

Fixed in rear to Pivot in the front.


Each one will swap positions with each other, but you have to take the inner frame and seals for the swap.

It looks like I will have to get them from the States (for example see this ebay item). Do you know if VW tinted glass is all the same colour? - basically will the blue donor car glass match these?

IIRC there were 2 different versions of "Tinted" glass offered in the US in the 80's on the "RABBIT", and I don't really recall the differences but I suspect it was the Trim levels.  IE: Rabbit C, Rabbit L, and Rabbit LS.  Which I think was also adopted on the Jetta.

The Rabbit "C" was the plain jane no tint, where as the L and LS were also different.  I know that on my LS, the tint was Greenish blue IIRC I haven't seen it since 2000…
I do know that the front windshield on my "LS" was Tinted on the base of the window and the upper was a darker tint.  Whereas my "L" had a tint at the top and not on the main glass.

The Cabriolets were all German Spec'd and Built and I think they used a different tint.
