Factory finish under MK1 tin top

Post

Got my Campaign over on its side to fettle the underside.

One query - what was the factory finish colour underneath? Was it black or body colour ?

Thanks in advance  IMG_2864.JPG

I have a stock 76, and it is factory color underneath. I imagine that after market undercoat would make it look black.

Well dirt and grime also make it change color as well as oil leaks and what not, can really get baked on.

My 81 was undercoated with the body shotz at the factory then the color of the car was painted over it.

Now for extra monies I could of had it rust proofed 400 dollars that Said it's us or rust, but when you looked at the caveats, if your car did rust and the repairs was more than the under coat, they would refund your undercoat dollars.

So I Spent about 30 bucks in Spray on undercoat for the car and sprayed it all over… kept the car rust free for 20 years I owned it and 8 of those were in the GWN (Great White North.). Better was to drive it over a freshly oiled road, and I had road oil dripping off the car for about a week….best undercoat ever.

My 93 Cabby has the same body shotz covered by color after, although some original primer pokes through.

Before cleaning:

After

whereas me after.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

From the factory it was body colour, same for under the wheel arches.
No one is ever really going to see it so up to you what ever colour you want.

Thanks guys - looks like the concensous is body colour then.

I'm taking the old stuff off anyway to ensure no rot. I'll then paint on couple of coats of rustproofer, redo the seam seal, spray on a stone chip coat, primer and a couple of coats of Alpine White 👍

Apparently Dinitrol 447 is nearly the same as the VW stuff.
