1. Where is the best place to secure the chains from a engine hoist on a DX engine/gearbox combo? I dont have the lifting eye by the alternator - but is it safe to lift on the alternator bracket?????
2. Is an engine hoist leveller needed?? I know getting the engine/gearbox out was tricky to get under the gearbox mount at quite an angle. I didn't mind getting the engine out like that but putting back a freshly painted engine/gearbox in to a freshly painted engine bay……. don't want scratches!!!!!
Thank all.

I put the engine block back in with a hoist from above( as it can go in level) and loosely fitted the side engine mount, with the engine still fitted to the hoist I slid the gearbox underneath the car and lifted it up onto the engine to bolt it up , without the radiator and injection stuff in way there was plenty of room to stand in the engine bay and lift the gearbox up while lining up the drive shafts if you have them still on the car.

It's not the best pic, but it's arrowed here (no alternator fitted).
Like Mark said, I put the engine in first and supported it using a beam across the top whilst I sorted the gbox out.
Fitting the gearbox is my job for this week. My plan is to lower the r/h side of the engine with a jack and use the hoist to lift the gearbox and slide it in to place. In the past it's been a 2 man job, but needs must!
I'll let you know how I get on!!

I don't recommend using the 1X12's as they don't last, but at the time it was warranted, I do have a set of 2X10's and 12's that I have been using for years, what with the ratcheting straps they make quick work and I haven't needed a leveler as with 2 straps I can get any angle that I need.
When doing a tranny I usually use a Toggle bolt with a eyelet to support the rear of the engine.
