Engine cutting out

Post

Hi
My 1991 Clipper 1.8 is giving me headaches trying to figure out why it runs for only less than a minute and then cuts out.
I have had the fuel pump, reservoir and filter replaced and that seemed to do the trick. The fuel flow seemed much stronger through the lines to and from the Weber carb.  However, the fix lasted only until I got it home from the garage. The next day it was back to its old tricks. I drove it for about a quarter of a mile and then it cut out and when restarted it would run for less than a minute and cut out. Impossible now to take it out on the road without a back-up tow car.
Any thoughts on possible causes would be appreciated.
cheers

It could be electrical as in the coil getting hot, failing, then ok after cooling. Likewise the condensor (if it has one) for the points in the distributor can fail when hot.
Have you checked there isnt muck in the fuel lines? this can cause something similar too.

I have a Mk2 Scirocco (1.6 with Pierburg carb) and when I dropped the tank I replaced the hard lines under the car along with those in the engine bay. It refused to start until the flexible pipes from the tank to hard lines were replaced. Have they possibly collapsed.? I've had other issues with it cutting out and having to be recovered so have also changed the fuel vapour separator.  Another thing I've come across is the in line fuel filter. Sometimes you can see the amount of gunk in it, black dust or a waxy looking substance. A quick fix is to turn it 180 degrees.  I also use the barbed version as Ive also had the straight version come off going uphill and around a blind bend….. Nightmare.

You need to narrow it down a bit to find out which system is letting you down. Are you using any coolant? Do a compression test. Have a can of easy start handy. When it plays up spray the easy start in the intake. If it runs on easy start then the problem is fuel related. If it doesn't look at the ignition.
