It is very easy to bend the wing if the glass and side frame are removed from the door.

I would ask to see the entire door as it sits on the car, as if the bottom Hinge is out of adjustment the door will pivot on the top and push out.

I would personally start with loosing the top hinge and pushing it inwards.

You can tell easier by the GAP of the hinge.

See the GAP between the hinges, it should be the same or really close from the top hinge to the bottom.

If your inner frame for the wing isn't in the correct position that too can cause the wing steel to move.

With the Wing and frame removed, the steel is very easy to bend out of place.

In a door that is adjusted correctly along with good seals the finger seal is under the lip of the frame top.

Start by looking at the hinges, and adjusting those,

The door GAP should be equal all the way around that is the bottom edge of the door is parallel to the frame, and the left and right edges are equal to the body shell.

Just take your time as when you are in a rush you can make things much worse with doors in general.

Brian knows his stuff but if you're not sure what to do just ask and don't try to bend the top of the door out without checking first.

Sadly some people do and then seriously wished they hadn't.
It really is one of those OMG what have I just done moments! 😉

X's 37… O'Crap moments…. I think we all have had them from time to time. Yes I am of Irish distraction, and that is what most of the parts stores call me when I enter. Mr. O'Crappy.

Use a board on the bottom of the door frame inside of the bottom and not on edge of the panel with a jack to hold it up while you try to adjust the hinges.  As that door is awkward to manhandle by a single person.

Sounds like hinge dropped. I've got same issue on myvalver… ive purchase new door lock pins. And will adjust door to fit accordingly. The cabrio door is more flexible so try correct the hinge and the rubber seal..should be fine. Check the door pin is central to the lock and that the plastic is on it as this help line everything up.

First, roll the window down, and see if the door aligns and closes  if it does, then you need to remove the door car and adjust the window glass.
There are 2 bolts on the window regulator that allow the window to squeue in the mount, as well as in and out adjustments on the back of the window on the bottom edge of the door, and then there is the window stop, that maladjusted can cause the window to go up further than it should.

In the Archive Section, are my how do I do that links.  One of those links is how to adjust a window stop, and a sagging door fix.
The sagging door fix shows how to check the alignment of the door by lining up the edges.

On a side note in the Vert section is where your glass to seals should be.

if you get a helper to support the door remove the lower hinge bolt. wiggle the hinge half, if it has play replace the hinge pin and half,  you'll only be bodging around the actual issue otherwise

the upper hinge is worth checking too but usually its only the lower one that goes. its a bit of a sod to do but no real trouble, main problem is you can only get mk2 versions so you have to ream out the hole on the car to accept the larger mk2 golf bolt

20170124_144149_HDR.jpg Hello again gent,

I have now tried to adjust the top hinge and makes no difference here is a photo of the hole door. Top and bottom hindges look to be the same distance??

From the pictures it appears to me that your door is not aligned up and down.

The door looks to have dropped, as I am looking at the body lines and they appear on the fenders and rear wing to be a little higher.

If the door is lower than it should be then you are going to have gap issues at the wing, and the Wing if the door bottom is in at the bottom will go out at the top.

What you have in effect is a lever and a fulcrum, that is the door to the hinges.

When you adjust a door you have to have them at 0.
what I see from the original pics is that you are closer at the bottom edge of the door then the top, and you have to have the top distance to 0, as the top edge of the "a" pillar seal or the Windshield Seal has to be over the edge of the finger wiper on the door.

While I agree that it is a major pain in the Posterior the door and adjustments have a mind of their own, as it is a give and take thing. Move it in at the top and the bottom goes out. Move it in at the bottom and the top goes out….  I have spent hours getting them to align..

The hinge points on the frame are hard to judge until you get the door off, so don't be tricked.

When I replaced my door on my 93, Only after seeing the frame mounts, doorless did I see the difference.  But them the Car I had bought had a door that was bent open, so I was suspecting it somewhat.

The reason that I have found that doors sag are that folks use their weight on them to get in or out of the car, that is why the Drivers door takes more abuse than the passenger side.

1st thing as I say, check if the hinges have play or not. if they do it makes door adjustments that much harder

then while making adjustments remove the striker pin from the door frame entirely and adjust till the door is square without being moved up or down by the striker pin. once setup nice, refit the striker and adjust till the door closes nicely without excessive force

Here are some quick snaps of my door wiper
and alignment.

I am not saying that your pins and holes are worn, that is the Pins have wobbled the holes they reside in, but I have never seen them cause a door to be that far out.

Also as Rub, said besure that your latching pin is adjusted inwards as if it is towards the outside then the door won't close properly.

You may want to purchase a string level and see where the door is in relation to a level line.  I have a lot of these types of tools, that were bought for other projects but have used them to find levels on other things as well.

How many times do you need a rotating Laser Level…Bought for a Drop Ceiling, but have used it for body repairs :)

I will take the striker off and check the hindges for play later today. I have a string line somewhere so i will try and find that to.

main problem with the hinges is if you have play and try to lift them up to align the doors then tighten the bolt and let go the doors will droop down again. So you got to take the little bit of droop caused by the worn hinge into account.

plus if they are really bad you may not be able to get enough 'lift' on the door unless you bend the hinges a touch. Other thing is if someone has bent the hinges in the past it can cause other issues later tryign to get it all back even after hinges are sorted.

I know because I had to bent my hinges on the mk2 to get the door line up, due to worn pins. then once the pins were fixed, I had to re-bend the hinges the other way to get it to line up

My case was easier, as I bought the Cab with a blown head gasket, and a door that was left open when the driver backed up the car and kinked it.

And I am glad that was pink vinyl tape on the trim strip.
