Discoloured Fuel

Post

My GTI is running rough and on draining some fuel out of the tank (thinking it was old) I found it was a quite distinct red colour.

Having flushed the tank out with clean fuel it is still just as red - see attached photo. I could understand if was brown ie rust but am at loss to know what where the red discolouration is coming from.

Any advice would be gratefully received. Red Fuel.jpeg

Discoloured Fuel

What type of tank do you have ?? I know that some have a pump / hole under the rear seats.

Well, was the fresh gas clear, as different fuels over here have different color, as in fuel that is taxed at a Farm rate is a different colored than regular gas in the city at the pumps.

Hoses deteriorate internally and can color the fuel as well as that could be colored red from a Return line that is going bad.

The biggest issue that we have over here is that they are using e-10 at the pumps, and almost all the older cars fuel lines degrade because of the ethanol added.

I have seen black colored lines do that on the fuel out of the tank, and then the filter cleans it up a wee bit.  See it mostly when I change out my fuel filter clear on one side and black out of the other.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

As Briano said was the new fuel clear or the same colour? That is important as if it is clear then you can perhaps remember if your trouble started after a fill up at a certain garage? It does look pretty red! IT COULD be that some (RED tractor diesel) was put in by mistake either by a driver or garage???
This would cause problems and only flushing the tank right out, a new filter and putting in fresh fuel, then running it until that clears would work.
Good luck with this.
Marcus.

The petrol has turned to varnish, you will need to look inside the tank to see how bad it is.
