Destroyed foam cold air intake - what to replace with?

Post

There's a twisted mess of wire and foam shreds where what I assume my cold air intake used to be (1990 GTI Cabriolet) - any idea what I should try to replace it with?

Which are you referring too.
A Cold Air intake on the engine, or the heating system air inlet.

Snapping a picture helps us help you faster.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

That looks to be the Air Snorkel that is connecting the airbox to the Ram behind the bumper at or near the front Transmission Mount…On my 90's it was a plastic hose assembly, but I am sure that yours looks to have been replaced with Pre-Heat Exchange hose Similar to that which comes off the manifold pre-heat to the air box.

There are threads on Cabby-info.com that tells you how to modify that, and then connect it to a larger diameter pipe (PVC) that is secured Behind the back side of the grille.

Just the air intake pipe.
Early cabs and the carbed versions were plastic.
It seems later cabs had these spiral wire covered sponge pipes.

Great, thanks - no doubt they will be rare as anything but I'll have a go at finding a plastic one. :)

From the pictures it looks very similar to the air intake hose used on a Mk2 Golf. That is still available from VW Heritage

Have a look on ETKA and track the number down then compare it with this one. I've just had a look, the Mk2 air hose is 191 129 627.
What year is your car and type of injection?

I ended up with a 'VW Golf 1 Cabrio Ansaugstutzen Stutzen für Luftfilter 067133899' from eBay, which fitted very well.

Sorry, I may have confused myself with the German. Just looked back in my eBay purchases, and found this Screenshot 2020-12-14 at 13.10.29.png
