Confusing

Hi can anyone please advise me what i would need to replace my mk1 coolant hoses .? There is ancillary sets then other sets .also a decent clip set to go with them .i seem to be losing a little coolant its not internal as theres drips in the garage .id like to go black silicone for the look.can anyone advise me please .also should the coolant be returning through the small bore pipe back to the expansion tank as soon as the car is started ?

Yes it should be returning to the expansion tank, that tells you you coolant is circulating and the water pump is doing it's job.

I dunno what car you have so can't advise on a coolant hose set.. Just have a look on eBay, all the big boys advertise their kits on there. As for clamps, I just use good quality Jubilee clips.

1990 does it have the oil cooler that is sandwiched to the oil filter flange?

If it does that "t" hose is pretty pricy, and they now offer it in silicone.

Then there are silicone kits where youcan get any color of hose that you want.

They used to sell one over hear at Napa, it had an "extra" nipple on it but I think it too has gone the way of the doo-doo.

I have hear of folks using Copper and Sweat fittings to re-make it.

OH Hades No, Never again….. I lived there in the 70's for 6 months, and was ever so glad to get transferred to North Carolina.

Napa is North American Parts Association.. One of the first big chains of parts stores.  The web site is www.napaonline.com

I live in the Northern part of Georgia.

New metal coolant pipe. (Just check it looks the same and fits your car)

I would have a good look at yours as they do last for some time, I've still got my original metal pipe on both my car and the Scirocco is 40 years old.
A rub down and lick of paint makes them look like new.

That is if the previous owner used proper coolant when they owned it, I have seen some rusted out ones from folks using water only as a coolant.  Or they never had to change it and the rust inhibitors were ineffective.

Now that isn't to say folks cracked or crushed them changing out things.

Is this the part you mean?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Oil-Cooler-SKODA-Felicia-MK1-MK2-Octavia-1-9D-SDi-TDi-068117021B-BV-BX/151886679007?hash=item235d26cbdf:g:VD8AAOSwT4lWSjBN

The water feed oil cooler/heater. It also warms the oil so it gets to running temperature quicker.

VW use it on lots of different cars and vans as you can see by the link above, 1st link I found so shop around for the right part.

Personally, I wouldn't use a water stabilized Oil cooler as  on the 90's I owned it wasn't installed, but on the 89 I owned and 90 Golfs I have seen it is installed again… Even the corrado's had them in the 90's so I am thinking it was a Karmann thing on Cabbies and not the Golfs of the 90's.

They can go bad, the "T" hose costs out the Wazoo, and well it can intermix the oil to a/f and simulate a bad head gasket.

With the Autos I have, the oil temp was really really up there running down the hot Georgia Asphalt at 80 mph with the a/c running, 130-150 even the water temp started to climb.  (the OAT at the road had to be 130f)… So I opted for a Wahler External Oil Cooler off a Volvo 740 Intercooled that I picked up cheap at the "yard" and a Transmisison  low profile exchanger off a Chevy that fit nicely in front of the a/c condenser.  Needless to say @ 85F running down the road at 90 mph with a/c my car never reaches above 115.

Well I used the on-line ETKA ( http://www.oemepc.com/ ) to find the pipe on my cabby (1993) and then with the part number it was an easy search on google.

The bad thing about the ETKA is that you have to remember where things are as the engine cooling information is on the engine tab as some things are in the body and the cooling section is for a/c…. I think they let Bosch design it.
