convertible roof and radio not working after electrices died - 1992 Rivage

Post

can anybody help?

a few weeks ago the electrics on my Rivage completely died while doing 60 down the bypass at 1am!  Traced the main problem back to the ignition so have a new ignition switch and barrel.  The car now starts and runs fine but the roof no longer works, neither does the radio, when the headlights are on the oil warning light and the water temp. light flash on and off.  To add to that, there is a loudish 'hum' from the engine, sounds like the noise an electric car makes when running.  Does anyone have any idea where to start looking for a fault?  When the car stopped it was the radio that went first followed by everything else, in case that helps.  All fluids are fine in the hood pump, there is no sound at all when I press the switch to open it.  I would be very grateful for any response :)

Knowing the Year fuel type, and Model helps.
As 90's with digifant have a ISV that is supposed to hum.

Check your fuses.
Sounds as if your new to you ignition switch isn't correctly installed bad, or that you may have broken a wire on the ignition switch cable, or a pin is wonky.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Thanks for the reply. My car is a1992 Rivage, petrol engine with the digifant. I have listened to the IS. just now, I can hear a hum like you say - it sounds louder in the car than with my head under the bonnet but I think it's the same noise.
I have checked the fuses and they seem ok. I can see that people are talking about the cabriolet roof relay but I have not found that yet if you could point me in that direction?
We have gone back to the ignition switch and possible broken wires but not found anything. Not sure why the radio is not working either- would they be connected in some way?
I have never had electrical problems with my car, they don't seem as obvious to fix as the mechanics

Check your fuses, as they can get shorted, and the electrics will find any path it can to get mack to b+.

The Top relays are in the boot behind the left side cardboard card.

What all did you remove to get the ignition switch removed?

Hello Briano

Fuses all good and so are the relays in the boot.

There do not seem to be any broken wires in the ignition switch cable

I am going to take it to an electrics specialist later this week unless you can think of anything else I may have missed?

There are a ton of things that can cause this ie:
Bad primary grounds
water logged relay internals or fuse box from water migration from rust around the windscreen or Radio coax that didn't have a drip loop

Verify that you have good grounds. Frame to battery and Frame to engine.

If all you did was to change the ignition switch then it could be that the new switch is bad, if everything was working prior to the switch change.

The roof and the radio have to have power from the SU terminal on the ignition switch. There are some switches that don't come with this terminal. Is it possible that you have installed the wrong switch?

Oh my goodness, I have checked the switch that came out and a picture of the one that is in there currently and they look different although it was sold as being for a cabriolet with a power hood. I have ordered another one with the correct terminals and will let you know what happens!

Just a quick up date - it was the switch! All changed and everything working, thanks both of you for your help

That's great news. Was the switch faulty or was it the wrong one?

Apparently the wrong one ( sold as the right one for a power hood) but it didn't have the push function? That's what the chap who fitted for me said- presumably the terminal that comes up if that makes sense
