clock/mpg display on dashboard not working.

I have a gti 1800,everything works perfectly ,my one problem is clock/mpg display is totally blank.
its no real problem as i never use this facility.
there must be a reason for this problem as I belive it's a common fault.
Can anyone advise me please.

Have you checked fuse 3?

Mine was showing 00:00 but I pulled the fuse for 30 seconds and then put it back and bingo. It's still working 6 weeks later

the mfa clusters have an earth on the side of the head too, though since everything else works its probably not that. worth a check regardless, its a brown/white ring terminal
