CIS switch / Sensor??

What is this? Is it a switch or a sensor for the CIS system? As part of my restoration I have not put the CIS system back in. I'm planning on running car with twin Webber's 45. I now have engine back in the car and running all the wires etc to hook everything up. So I appear to be missing a look for this thing. I assume it's a switch or a sensor for the CIS system since that the the only wiring I haven't reinstalled. And if yes it's for the CIS I presume I don't need it if ik running carbs, so can I just remove it and plug the hole? I'm pointing to it in the attached photo then a close up of it.

On my car there is nothing in that hole..?

The brown plug and sensor above it (thermo time switch) on top of the flange  is used for the fuel injection system, it tells the 5th injector if it's needed by sensing the coolant temperature.

That hole has a blanking plug in it on my car.
That looks like a switch of some kind as it has 2 terminals. Has got any kind of part number on it? I can just about make out some numbers.

I know the US cars had lots of extra bits attached to the CIS to control emissions etc, so it may be a thermo switch that was used for that purpose.

You could have a look on the online EKTA thingy - https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/golf/go/
see if you can spot the part.

The thermo time switches are worth a bit of money (if its working).

It looks like it's maybe been rigged up as a temperature switch to run the cooling fan with the 2 pins on it? Definitely doesn't look standard, as others have said my Mk1 doesn't have this.

Yeah the cooling switch is the one on top and is on same loom as the oil switches. I think the bottom one might be a thermo switch for the CIS System I pulled out because the connections are on the loom that goes back to the CIS black box.

From what I'm hearing it sounds like I can probably take it out and plug the hole since most folks don't seem to have it. I'll take it out and see what the part number tells me.

Mark1gls, yeah what you described about the top sensor being to check temp for 5th injector is exactly what I think the bottom sensor is on my car.

Just don't forget to place a hose clamp on that upper radiator hose :).

I have seen folks place a sensor in that position as they don't have a bung screw to fit.

Probably a (POS Previous Owners Screwup) to resolve the I dropped a part and can't find it.

Good catch on the hose clamp briano1235…..you can't see from the photo but there's no radiator in yet lol. I was just mocking everything up to see where stuff goes and how it fits. But that sure is the sort of small detail that I would forget then have a huge mess to clean up! Lol

Yeah I've seen that before about using a sensor as a plug. In this particular case when I couldn't find the wiring loom for it I went back and checked my pre-stripdown photos of the car and it looks like it was hooked up to the CIS system so I then checked the wiring and it looks and sounds just like what mark1gls said, possibly a thermo switch for the 5th injector. I'll pull it out and see if I can get a part number on it and confirm. Either way I don't think I need it if I'm running carbs so will try to find a plug…or I'll just leave the sensor in there ;) lol 🤣
