No idea what is going on

Got a mk1 1.8 carb. Think it's a Webber on there. Can drive lovely for an hour or 10 mins from day to day then acts like it's starved of fuel. Before I rebuild the carb wanted to know what a wire off the manifold is for and where it should connect also if you can help with my carb make,it's a manual choke 16242856945291822925326320774567.jpg 16242857158713388681481188368169.jpg 16242857511857912964551122441760.jpg

It's definitely a Weber 32 34 dmtl
Could it just be crud in my carb causing the running issue as it was sitting for years

You can buy a service kit for the Weber. The wire looks as though it comes from the  (hedgehog) round plate on the underside of the inlet manifold. There should be the other half to it, normally on the other side by the heater pipes.

Does the intermittent rough running sound like crud in the carb??

If its been off thee road for a few years it will pay to do a few checks. Petrol goes off and can be like varnish so will stick everywhere you don't want it to. As a matter of course renew all the rubber lines and fuel filter in the engine bay. Start at the filler neck and check it's condition. If rusty it could be dropping rust into the fuel system. You may notice it leaking if it's that bad when you put fuel in. If you're going to check inside the tank be careful when taking the fuel sender off. You may well see rust particles in the bottom or your tank may be internally rusty. You can fish these out with a magnet but you won't get all of them. There is a filter on the the bottom of the sender. They can lose the end piece. Check the hard fuel lines under the car. They may need replacing.  Don't forget to check the electrical side of life in the engine bay as well. On my TLP carb I also had a bad diaphragm that had to be replaced. Hope this helps

Checked in the tank it's clean not rusting same on filler neck, have removed the pickup and cleaned the little filter on the end of that, new rubber from fuel pickup to new stainless lines running to front with new rubber in engine bay, new inline filter, new pump on front of engine, new vapour seperator. Last time it played up I was able to spray carb cleaner into the carb and it ran well while receiving it making me think it's crud in carb.

Got carb off last night and found the base rubber mount was split and the short rubber vac hose on carb to it's diaphragm was split. Also when driving the vac pipe off carb to airbox was sucking flat. What's best to replace that short pipe with and the other vac pipe and why would it suck flat??

I've replaced all my vac Hoses with silicon hose 3mm I'd I think. It may be sucking flat if its rubber and old and therefore collapsing internally. If you still have the pipe off the distributor change those as well.  Have a look at the write ups for the welding tip in the fuel lines as well.

Definitely worth replacing the rubber mount. There is also an aluminium replacement part available too as an alternative - from Eurocarb in the UK - although this can introduce some issues re: heat transfer between the carb and manifold (others may have useful input here).

I'm running one of these aluminium plates on my 1.8 Clipper and DMTL without issues.

Are you running standard airbox or aftermarket? Note that Weber carb sits a bit higher than the OE Pierburg and so the front bracket on cam cover that secures the airbox needs to be raised up by around 15mm or so - otherwise the rubber mount between carb and inlet manifold may be subject to undesirable twisting leading to premature failure.

Just replaced the mount as it was split, yes spoke to a helpful guy at crazyquifs who informed me of the front bracket so I have fixed that. Stripped and rebuilt my carb now it has loads of what looked like sand or little crystals in it, I'm assuming it's old fuel that crystallised. New vac pipes on as well and replacing the one last short piece of fuel pipe as we speak so will see how she goes. Hopefully it's solved now

Idle is amazing now will update when I finally get to drive it in a few days

The part number for the "extension stud" to raise the air filter bracket is 6488008 and there are two of them.

I've already done it, they wanted about9.50 + vat each for them so I went toy local engineering place, got 2 nut extenders and threaded bar for a couple of quid instead, jobs a good one

Carb rebuilt, new lines on and fuel filter , plus base rubber. Going well now no bogging issue just some tweaking left to make it a daily
