I'll be buying autogleam hood cleaner/protector on my home from work.
Is there anything else that you use or would recommend instead of??

The autoglym stuff is good - just make sure you do it on a warm, not windy day, and out of direct sunlight.

I been using it for years.  It's a pain that you can't buy autoglym hood protector without having to the complete kit.  I bought a product called "wonder ".  £9 for the protector.  I'll let you know what it's like soon.

I use '303 Aerospace Protectant' as many others on here do.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/303-Aerospace-Protectant-oz/dp/B00957CUK2

It's not cheap but it is supposed to be the best there is and just do exactly what it says on the bootle and you'll be fine!

So do you clean the hood first then apply this as a sealant?

How do you clean? I find the hood gets covered in fluff really easily!

This is what I do but it might not be for everyone and this is only for mohair not PVC.

For general cleaning I have a 10" long floor brush which I use for 5 to 10 minutes on it every week.
The bristle is medium not hard like your grandmother would use to scrub the floors but it's not ultra soft either.

It's very similar to a brush used for snooker tables, in fact if you can get one that would be ideal.
(I used to play way to much snooker with I young)

Mentioning snooker that's is exactly how I use it.
I brush from front to back in 18" square blocks just like a snooker table but on a smaller scale.
Taping out the brush every minute or two.
I do the whole top and then down and round the rear window.
(wait till you see what comes out)

Along with that I have a small but invaluable hoover from B&D that plugs into the cigarette lighter.
I use that as well to suck up the dust, I find it makes a big difference.

I wash the roof once a month at the jet wash front to back after the above, being ultra careful not to penetrate the seals and the top of the Windows. Don't get to close with the lance and don't use the full power, your trying to wash it off not rip it off!

Finally (deep breath) on the day of the 303 Aerospace Protectant I do all of the above and let the roof dry off in the shade until you can just fell it's slightly damp and then I apply it according to the instructions.

As I said not for everyone but each to their own I say.
Now all of this has just reminded me of another job I have to do this weekend!

Hi,

I know this thread is nearly 5 years old but can anyone please offer some advice on cleaning and treating a hood on a Cabrio I've just bought as a restoration project.

The guy I bought it from says the car has been parked up outside for the last couple of years, but before then in a garage for a few years.

The vinyl hood seems to be in a decent condition but slightly brittle, so I'm reluctant to drop it.

Can anyone offer how to treat and clean before I drop the hood, remove it and store it.

Thanks,

Matt

Wait for a warm sunny day, the top will soften a wee bit, never do anything to a cold top.
