Brake servo upgrade MK1

Post

I've decided to replace the stock brake servo on my MK1 with a MK2 16V "9 servo, as per the braking faq and threads. Can anyone confirm that the MK2 16V brake servo for LHD has part nr 357 612 107A? And just to be sure the correct MC would be 1H1611019B, from VWHeritage? Thanks

Looks like the right servo yes, due to the long rod.

Are you UK? Where are you getting the servo from?

Master cylinder looks to be the correct 22mm one too.

Ok great, thanks. I'm in Norway. Haven't really started to dig for the servo yet, but googling the part number shows a few places that offer them new at steep prices. Might try out scrappys..

Ah cool, I'm Uk but have a LHD car. I've only upgraded to a mk1 gti setup, but I had to modify a RHD servo using some m10 threaded bar to extend the rod.

Would you say the upgrade is worth spending 180£ on a new servo? Just went back to a 40 year old car as my daily, but wouldn't mind modern braking power on the highway..

Only you know that, but in my opinion only if you have puny legs, wont make the brakes any better (still 40 odd year old design), just wont have to push as hard.

Depends what engine you're running? And also what calipers and discs?

It's all stock a 1.6 engine FP and stock calippers/disks.. Don't think I want to upgrade the disks and possibly larger wheels though

Personally I think it's a pointless upgrade unless you're fitting bigger brakes and a nippier engine.

Well I already bought the 9" servo so I'm probably going to do this anyway.

I do wonder as you say it's a pointless upgrade without calipers/discs, wouldn't it be better to use a 20mm MC with the larger booster like the later 8v golfs? Since I'm keeping the original calipers I don't really need the larger MC. As i understand it a larger MC makes less pedal travel but requires more effort on the pedal. Even though it is compensated for by a larger servo, I wonder if the ratio stays the same as my current setup. A lot of people here seem to recommend the upgrade though..

Anyway ended up buying the 22mm Master cylinder along with the 9" servo.. If it doesn't improve the brakes it'll be all set for a future caliper/disc upgrade at least.

Don't forget you'll need a reservoir/bottle from a mk2 to match the new MC.

Clumsily I didn't notice this and i'm searching hard to get hold of one now. It's obsolete!!

You can fit a mk3 one or one from ford's and fiat's but the shape may collide with the expansion tank.

Apologies if you know all this already.

Yes thanks for the tip haven't found one myself yet. VWHeritage has one that fits, nr 1H1611301A, but it's 55£..

As far as I know, from speaking to Julian at vw heritage their part no. 358611301 will work also.

It looks more like a mk2 GTi bottle too as opposed to G60.

I'd rather have the genuine thing so will give it until Monday to source one.

Mine's a LHD car so not sure if that would fit.. Good luck with the hunt, wouldn't mind a more original look myself.
