Brake pedal return spring

Hello fellow golf mk1 folk,

I recently decided to change the steering column and pedals of mk 1981 golf because the welding had snapped nastily

The second-hand replacement has a torsion spring serving as the return of the brake pedal but it is different to the original. On the replacement, the spring is not doing anything. It also appears to be on the other side of the pedal.

Could someone send me a few pictures of their pedal and perhaps explain what i must do to fit a new spring and perhaps suggest where I can get one from?!
