braided brake lines - fitting issues

Post

creative thinking required

So, about 20 years ago (yes, really) I bought a set of braided flexi brake lines at GTI International. Just getting round to fitting them (loooong project), and whilst the are the right lenght, and the ends are the right fittings, they don't play nicely where solid meets flexi. Here is a pic to show you what I am talking about:

Looking at the pics in my Haynes, it would seem the original part, goes through the bracket on the inner wing, and rests on a shoulder, then the solid line connects, with the spring clip keeping it solid.
As the flexi doesn't pass through the hole in the bracket (well it would if I filed it slightly, the spring clip won't fit in between. If I did file it so it passed through the bracket, there is no shoulder for it to rest on, so the solid line would be taking all the 'stress'. Does that make sense?
Any clever suggestions as to what I may be able to do. I'm wondering if I could separate the bits that make up the flexi end and get a washer in to create a shoulder….Pics of the flexi end and springy bit if that helps.

Since that appears to be a copper line, I think it may not be bent right at the union where it is supposed to meet the braided.

I have always seen Steel piping. Well since 81, then on my 89, 90, 92, and 93.  IIRC they meet at a True Vertical.  or straight up and down.

But the Bentley shows it at a angle?..

It is a Puzzlement.

The Clip on mine is used to keep the connection centered…May be because your clip isn't on, as it holds it against the bracket, and did your bracket get bent.

If I remember rightly there was quite a bit of movement and needing to hold everything in place when doing up when I fitted mine.

To me it just looks like your copper line is way off.
I'd try and manipulate the line further down to bring it closer to the bracket

Apologies for the quality of the photo but I had to zoom in quite a bit to show this.

This is mine after making new copper lines, fitted with Hel lines and new clips

I think the braided lines generally have slightly larger ends on them. I know I had to file out the hole a touch to get the end to go through.

Thanks all.
The solid line isn't quite in the right place because it's just been fitted - once I get the flexi issue sorted it will be bent to fit properly.

From the pic 85 posted I can see that the end on my flexi is different, I'll need to try and make up something that acts as a collar to stop the line going straight through the bracket. I've had a look to see if I can find a new fitting to replace the one on my flexi, but can't find anything like the one in the pic.

1985 what front brake set-up are you running?
If it is the 256 Audi set-up (Girling 54 calipers, 16v discs) can you tell me what pads you are using. I bought 16v pads, but they are completely wrong.

The issue with pads that I have seen between the 16v and a plain jane Golf of the same year is the Rotor.

If you have a Solid rotor, then your pads that you order are thicker.  These Thicker pads will not fit on a vented rotor, as they are too wide and prevent the caliper from going on.

Over on this side of the Pond, I have found that some of the parts stores are listing the pads for the 90ish Cabriolets as a solid rotor which is incorrect…

So I have learned that if I look up a 83GTI there is a Vented rotor as well as a solid listed, and I get the Vented Rotor pads…. that little 1/8 of an inch difference between the pads is a Killer on a weekend project.

If that is what you are describing….

Sorry standard 239mm 8v equipment on mine.
Have been considering a G60 set up of late but for time being the original stuff is sufficient when it has been set up properly

It looks like my hel lines have round ends and yours are flat sided for a spanner.
I seem to remember they fitted through the hole on the body ok but where tight in the clips.

Wait until you have to take on the rear end thats where things get really fiddly
