Auto Box Help

Post

Hi Chaps,
I'm looking at changing the transmission fluid and giving the box a bit of a service. I remember seeing a post a while ago showing how to do this and the best bits to get, Cant seem to find it now.
Please can some one point me in the right direction.
Thanks

There is no Drain plug, so there is the Easy Way, or the hard way.

You need 17mm bolt and 2 nuts or a 17mm Allen
You need about 1pt (look up the specs) 90 wt oil .75L
You need about 6 quarts of Dexron3 ATF fluid.

Hard way. (be warned that this is a partial) WHY?
because you can not get the oil out of the torque convertor unless you Drop the transmission and remove it to drain, even then you cant get all the old atf out.

Drop the Transmission, remove the Torque convertor and drain it over a large pan, about 3 quarts.

Now take the curb shield off.
Remove the 4 bolts that hold the Pan on over a large pan about 2.5 quarts.

Now replace the TC, and Replace the pan (filter if you want)

Remove the lower 17mm Allen bolt on the Differential and drain the 90 wt out.  Replace the Allen

Re-hang the Tranny.
I told you it would be hard.
Refill differential via the speedo cable hole.
Refill the ATF 3 quarts. Start the car rev a bit Cycle between park and N……
Check level and fill to mark with 1 pint at a time till barely hitting the stick, drive it 1 km, and top off little at a time. There is about 7 oz difference between empty and too-full when hot.

Easy way (which I have used and is easier.)
17mm Allen for the differential.
1 pt of 90 weight
9-12 Quarts of ATF fluid.
Mighty-Vac tool and make a 1 quart vacuum jar.
5 feet of vinyl tubing diameter of the Mighty-Vac hose ports.

Take a glass Pasta Jar with Metal lid Drill two holes one size smaller than the Vinyl hose int he metal lid

Cut the hose as 3 1/2 feet and 1 1/2 foot lengths.
Screw the Cap on the Jar tight and insert the longer hose to 1/4 inch from the bottom of the jar
Insert the shorter hose into the open hole about 1/2 to 1 inch below the lid.
Use JB-WELD Quick to seal the inside and outside of the lid where the hoses enter it.

You now have created a 1 quart Vacuum Catch Jar that is also great when bleeding Brakes.

Remove the Dip stick for the transmisson.
Insert the longer Vinyl Tube down the holder and in to the pan area of the Tranny.

Insert the Shorter end of the vinyl tube on your Mighty vac and squeeze it to Suck out all the atf that you can, and remember how much you suck out (around 2 1/2 quarts, the Pasta jar should have markers on it as in 1/2 full is 16 ounces, ….. Write that number down.

Remove the tube and fill with the same amount of New ATF.

Drive the car for about 3 miles, then rinse repeat the suckage and refill. Till all 9 or 12 Quarts have been Cycled through….

Jack the Front end and support on stands.

Once you have the last Quart to pour in, STOP.
Using the 17mm allen or a 17MM bolt and 2 nuts
Loosen the lower 17mm Drain. and remove the Speedo cable. Take care not to unclip it off the cluster, but more about that later.
remove the 10mm bolt that hold the gear, and remove the gear from the Transmission.

Allow to drain then replace the plug.

Via the open speedo hole fill the Differential with the proper amount of 90wt .75L

Replace the Gear, and Bolt replace the speedo
Take the Car off the Stands.
Place the car on the ground
Check that the ATF is Barely touching the bottom of the stick.  (You have to Wipe it as ATF that you are filling it will be on the stick and give you a false indication… check wipe check wipe check…

Ok, drive it around about 2km.
Check the ATF level and top off a little at a time check and re-check……

By sucking out, and refilling the thing you are slowly replacing all the ATF in the car with new, and whatever is still old will dilute…. It is easy to do.

Now you won't be replacing the filter, or dropping the pan, but if you do you can, it isn't that hard just 4 bolts
after the skid plate is removed. 19mm nuts and bolts IIRC  just can't remember…. anyways When you drop the pan, have a catch pan ready ( I like those disposable roasting pans) to Catch the fluid, you will only be draining the 3 quarts that are in the transmission body, and can wipe out the pan of Clutch shavings and bits.
You can also change the filter, but you will need a new filter gasket.  You will Refill the tranny with about less than 3 quarts.  But if you still want to get the old out of the torque convertor you will need to do the suck it out method.  You probably won't need the Pan seal as it is usually good.

When I bought my Cabbies, I did drop the pans and cleaned the filter snd pan.  I then did the suck drain and re-fill to refresh all the oil, I do think I only used about 9 quarts.

I have a How do I replace the Torque Convertor seal, see my how to links on my signature. If you want to know how to drop a tranny.

There is also a link to the ATSG (automatic transmission service guide) pdf file.

Opps forgot the reason that you fill almost full and drive it about 1-2km is that as you are diluting the fluids, it gets up to temp and is flowing through the torque convertor.  So driving it is needed also the oil expands when it get hot so filled when cold is different when it is hot, and a little goes a long way…. as I stated hot to low is only about 7-10 ounces different.

Oh and if driving it around you notice that your speedo isn't working…

Remove the Drivers side Vent.

Worm your arm to the back of the instrument cluster and re-connect the speedo cable.
