With or without Aire is the question I must ask.

A/C equipped is here.

My addition to it is to cover the above cut out after with a Piece of Plastic that you trim to fit, and affix with 3 Trim Screws 1/4 inch in length.

One big hint is a two pairs of Hose Pinch Pliers, to limit the coolant drain from the inside to only the core.  You place them on the engine side of the firewall.  I also suggest that you replace both heater hoses at that time so you don't have to worry about them in the future.

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

If your system is original, then when you replace the 2 short hoses to the matrix from the engine bay, replace the hose joiner on the lower hose as well. The originals corrode, but the modern replacements are plastic. If the clips on the hoses are original (not jubilee clips) then get the proper tool for them, like this (cheaper versions might be available) https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Watering-Hoses-Accessories/Laser-4024-Clamp-Pliers-Long-Reach/B0012M9JSY otherwise getting the hose clips off is a nightmare as access is limited.

Hope this helps.

Pop the cover off, disconnect the hoses, and it should slide out, Gonna say it is in a tight space.

Thats interesting looking at the above pics! obviously if you have the steering wheel on the correct ie: Right hand Side ( ) you dont have to deal with the pedals!

It should look something like this if its a later S2 DSC04032.JPG

Your new matrix hopefully will arrive with new foam. If not you will need some. It ensures the air flows through the heater, and not around it, plus it stops it from rattling!

As previously mentioned its tight for access but work in the engine bay first and get the hoses disconnected (if she hasn't had a coolant change in the last two years then do that job at the same time)

I use a low pressure airline and apply pressure to one hose to the matrix, this helps drain out the coolant so she will not leak as much inside the car.

Then remove the clips from inside - use rags inside because some will spill out no matter how well you blow it clear.

Pull off the cover, withdraw the matrix

thanks all,

carpet and centre console are already out.. as I am trying to find another leak through the bulkhead

I have a new heater matrix from vw heritage, but don't have new hoses.

I assume I need 2 of these hoses ( wow £13 each!, the matrix was only £20)

is the cover easy to get off?

Two hoses (plus clips) but only if they need replacing?

is always helpful, especially if the original is a metal one!

The cover is easy, just push in the little tabs to release

As you pull the hoses through the firewall have a bucket handi, then if you can blow air in to a hose and catch the dribble in a bucket on the other side.

As vw had managed to put the interior clips round the back of the pipe I couldn't get to them with my hose pliers so I just cut them off too. Matrix is out  :) WP_20170307_09_44_26_Pro.jpg WP_20170307_09_44_38_Pro.jpg

Do yourself a favor.  Replace that plastic butt-to-butt connector.  Go yo a hardare store and get a Brass Barbed Hose repair.  That plastic piece is old, and weakened. It is a time bomb on your ride that will fail you.

5/8 inch hose mender.

I had one break on me..... I was stuck on the Interstate until I called a Taxi to pick me up.. run me to the Closest Hardware store, and a Gallon of fluid later.... (4 hours, and a 50 dollar cab ride, plus the cost of the Gallon of water, A/F and mender).

I have a How I hate plastic parts thread....

Where I have replaced all the plastic frigging parts with Metal.
(yes the 92's Plastic outlet flanges for Digifant.)

And Beefing up your heater Valve to prevent failure.
