no you dont need the green bit, thats still in there. if you're careful you can tease the large round retaining ring thingy over the bung.

IIRC to get the large one out it was 27mm…. I just use a pvc connector from a home store, can't remember the size it allowed me to glue a bit of pipe in to the fitting and then use a pair of  lock jaw pliers to get it out without busticating it all to hades…..

Rub is correct that you can get the inner plug ring over the outer, did it about 3 times in 300K miles….

I think it was a 1 or 1 1/4 connector…

can just about make out some green colour under all the filth :P

the models with a smaller flywheel have a white one instead, b it of trivia these are adaptors for special VW timing equipment which reads from the square castings on the flywheel. there are 2 colours of insert to make sure the tool is set at the correct height into the gearbox bellhousing for the different flywheel t0pyes
