1989 Cabriolet Ignition Coil

So I hooked up the ignition coil and it started to spark with the connections all installed. Not sure what the deal with that is. Everything was connected properly, so removed it and measured the resistance as per bently manual. My coil is sitting at 2.5ohms between connecting 1 and 15 and then reads 8kohms between 15 and the 4 (center tower) according to bently this is bad. Sounds like my coil is bad but does anybody have any info on ignition coil testing?

Also what would cause it to spark when connected?

If the Bentley says it's bad it probably is.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Yeah I ordered a new one Briano1234, just wondered about the ohm values. I see there are others on the market that specifically state they are 3ohms etc when new so was curious if this is maybe wrong coil for the car or the 3ohm versions are not for this car. I'll test the new one when it arrives and I might pull the coil off my other mk1 and check that too just for sh1ts n giggles and see what they all measure out at.

Hey Briano1234, this may be a "my bad" on me but I got the new coil in and the new coil reads same as previous coil. Which got me thinking, so I then decided I had possibly messed something up. So I measured the resistance of the leads on my fluke. Turn out they are about 2.4ohms when measured the leads, when I then measure the coil values it jumps to the 3 ohms we discussed previously. So that means my coil is about 0.5 to 0.6ohms which now appears to be correct according to bently manual. New and old coil both measure the same. I prob should have taken into account the resistance of the leads on my fluke.

Now what that doesnt explain is the big old sparking I got when I hooked it up………will try new coil anyway and see how that goes.

Ah in the old days of Basic Electrics, they droned for a few days about always test your meter….. Resistance 0 scale and see if they are Zero.  On the old Simpson meters that I used Back in the day (analog) you could Zero the meter.
