1.8 carb fuel supply?

Post

Hey all,
I’m restoring a 1990 cabrio 1.8 clipper, it’s been off road Unknown amount of years
I have heard it run when bought 6 months ago - now won’t start.

I have spark, pulled the fuel pipe to carb and cranked, fuel comes out in spurts…

Is this normal? Or what should fuel flow look like? I assume there is an elec pump in tank?

I was expecting constant fuel pressure with ignition on…

Cheers

If it's a carburettor model then yes it's normal. The fuel pump is mechanical and is mounted on the front of the engine. It is driven by the engine, that's why it only pumps when you crank the engine.

Has per Steve its mechanical and only works when the engine is running (or cranking). If the car's been left and not run for a long time the petrol can have evaporated from the carb and fuel lines and drained back to the tank. This then requires a bit of cranking to get sufficent  fuel back up to the carb with enough pressure to work. Sounds like you know have fuel upto the pump, try it again.

Also if left for years the fuel can go off making starting difficult. Try squirting a little new petrol straight into the carb after removing the airfilter/housing

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.
