1.6 gti rebore piston search

Post

Slight issue, EG 1.6 block has gone to get rebored and fitted with oversize pistons but the company that was going to supply the pistons to the machine shop say they cannot source them now . It looks like the only ones available are wossner competition forged pistons at around £550.
Do any of you guys know of a source or alternative piston that is suitable? . cheers

Ouch.  And years ago I thought 50 a set of 4 with rings and wrist pins was steep on a 948CC Bugeye @ .20 over.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Yes I've heard this is an issue.

I looked into sourcing some alternative pistons for a 1.8 and there was nothing even close. So many variants such as wrist pin dia pin C/L to crown height, compression ratios. You may struggle unless your lucky and a set come up on ebay.
Even looking into changing rods didn't help as big end dia, width c/l distances all pretty unique to vw's

I think the closest piston was an Alfa Romeo but it wasn't right and just as hard to get hold of.

There are websites out there with lots of sizes for comparison but they take some finding.

Oh boy is it the same for 1.8 engine as well ?I have a 1.8 engine that I thought ,If I could not source pistons for the 1.6 I would rebuild that.   Back to the drawing board.

In one of my modded EG's I ran pistons from an early 10v Audi Quattro Turbo (Audi used the EG piston as a  base for the early quattro turbo), I know I had to modify something to make them work, but it was nearly 15 years ago so cannot remember what.

My 1700 EG used stock Corrado G60 pistons (81mm) but the block was decked to suit.

I don't think its an issue for 1.8's - not yet anyway. I was carrying out research for a different exercise altogether.
I was trying to see if it was possible to make a 2.0l from a 1.8 short block cheaply by boring out and using a different crank or off set grinding it. Nothing VW made was going to work so I started looking at alternatives but there was nothing obvious that used VW's dimensions.

Didn't they make an 8v version of the bubble block? or where they all 16v?

Edit: I just checked, the 3a is a short block 2.0 8v..

Thanks I will look into that

Looked into the G 60 option, PG engine code pistons still available in Germany but £140 odds each !! so bit the bullet and gone down the Wossner forged piston route just means she might not be on the road this year again. Still she has not been on the road since 96 so another year will do no harm thanks for the replies.

I was trying to see if I could hide 2L internals in a standard 1.8 block with maybe just a rebore. Its been done as tsr sold them but not sure what crank they use? Maybe a AAZ diesel?

You can't go wrong with Wossner although probably over kill on a standard engine. Look on the bright side you maybe able to shove a load of laughing gas in as and when the need arises!

Now there's a plan.  It is as you say a bit of overkill for a standard engine  but will work out cheaper than the G60 route with machining costs.
