1.6 EZ ign timing?

Post

Hi guys.. fingers crossed someone can help me..
Needing to set up the ign timing on my jetta fitted with a 1.6 EZ engine.. Webber 32/34carb.
I have got myself a Gunson timing light with the advance deg knob.

Some other info i've found says 15deg and not 6deg advance.. is 6deg correct? Is it correct to remove the vac on a ez carb engine??

I have done some digging and it looks like what i need to do is..  please say if its wrong..

Make sure with the pulleys at TDC that the flywheel is on the 'o' marker. (It is)
(I've just fitted a new cambelt and the valve timing is bang'on at TDC)
Remove the vac hose to the dizzy and plug
The warm the engine up, undo the 13mm dizzy nut abit, set the timing gun to 6deg (gun clipped to ht1, point at the flywheel and diamond mark (just before the 'o' marker) should line up with the gearbox pointer.. this is 6deg advance.

Would this be the right way to do it??
Any help would be great.

CHEERS.

Does the above method sound right apart from the deg?

I never use a timing light…… adjust the timing by ear on tick over, mark where the dissy is so you have a starting point then drive the car, advance timing till it "pinks" under load, the retard timing a little at a time till "pinking" stops…

It's such a pain to get the timing light near the hole with the injection stuff in the way.

Run the car on super unleaded petrol as I find they seem to run better on it..

the factory figure is 18 degrees BTDC with the vacuum line left connected to the distributor. with good fuel in it you can usually add a bit more advance.

the GTI engines are timed to 6 degrees BTDC with vacuum line on distributor disconnected and plugged, hence confusion
