Where to buy a GTI

Hello to you all, I have just registered as I am very keen to become an owner of a MK1 GTi (My dad owned a one of the last 1.6s before it was updated to 1.8 and I am just mad about them). I was wondering if anybody could tell me of a specialist garage that sells good Mk1s. Your help is most appreciated.

Ian who runs Wagen Wheels seems like a decent chap and knows his stuff. I've visited his place a number of times with a friend who was after a GTI. Ian spent couple of hours with us going over the cars he had on sale and showing us around his workshop and cars he was working on. Ian cars seem incredibly clean and well maintained, plus he appears to put together history files to go with each car. From what I've heard both Wagen Wheels and Volksdragon are good, although only Wagen Wheels seems to be runs as full time business.

If I had over ?3000 to burn on GTI, I would speak to these guys. When you think about infinetly safer then spending that money on one of those supposed concours GTIs that appear on Ebay fom time to time. In the end my mate got his GTI from Volksdragon, although this more to do with Ian having no Lhasa greens cars at the time.

I was asking Ian about one car in particular, and he told me that they do not carry out bare metal resprays on sales cars, as it is always better to respray over the top of sound original VW paint whenever possible. He was also telling me the car has no paper work pertaining to an engine rebuild, so it is best to assume that it has not had one.
I would have thought a Mk1 over ?3k they would have had the above carried out.
Would I need to get a head overhaul, new rings and big end bearings done then on this car

As most mechanical work adds little to the resale value of a Mk1 Golf, it is quite possible ?3k dealer cars may not have had recent major engine work as long as it is basically sound. The determination of engine overhaul requirement can be found via the normal checks (oil pressure, oil consumption, cylinder compression, crank play, etc). I think bottom ends can go to 200k and heads to around 80k miles on average before overhaul as a general guide.

In addition to what Dubboy says - I think you can look at a car from a dealer being ?500 or so more than what you would pay for the same car privately. The difference is you get a certain amount of comeback that you don't get with a private sale - plus reputation. Wagenwheels and Volksdragen work on repuataion and word of mouth and if they sell rubbish, clubs and forums like this will quickly spread the word.
