What do you think?

Hi, names Stuart. Im a new member on the site. Have owned MK2's as daily drives but am now looking to get a good MK1 as a second car. What would you suggest be the best way of finding a good original Campaign model: looking at all the ads -ebay and magazines or might it be advisable to get myself to the numerous events of the summer season to get a bit more knowledge before jumping in?

Any advise would be much appreciated :)

Welcome firstly.

If I were you I'd decide on what exact spec of vehicle you actually want ie what you can afford, engine size, door number, colour, standard or modified etc and then keep an eye out on here for sale cars. There is a 'buyers guide' to help you learn more about where things can go wrong.

There are specialist traders who sell VW's such as Future Classics, Golfs Galore, Volkswizard to names just a few.

My advice is to read as much about the pit falls and buy one as tidily as you can.

Hello Stu , Dano's advice is spot on , cars at shows tend to bit overpriced generaly but it's a good idea to talk to the mk1 owners there as they will give you good 'insider' knowledge -look at a few before buying and try to drive them you'll know a good one when you find it , when you look at one check for rust especially on a sunroof model as these tend to rust abit more than non-sunroof models and panels especially for early cars are getting difficult to get hold of , read every article you can lay your hands on or take someone with you who really knows there stuff .It can take ages to find what your looking for , i looked everywhere for mine for about 4 months on ebay, freeads, autotrader etc before finding the car i bought parked outside my local tesco's . Good luck your mk1's out there somewhere
