twin-cam clippers

Hello. I must say I'm very impressed by the site generally.

Just curious to know how modified cars fit with the club's membership.

I have a clipper with Jamex suspension. It looks good but engine is no longer of interest to me. So I bought a jetta 16v which drove very quickly and now the MOT is expired it resides in my garage waiting to be salvaged for the engine and running gear. I had long thought about modifying the clipper engine but when I saw the 16v engine I became intensely interested in the design detail. It kind of looks like half a flat-head V8, the sort of thing you see in a model T hot-rod, and has those eye-pleasing induction runners on top.

It also has a distinctive throb at idle and growls under load that's very addictive. Probably because I removed and bypassed one of the four mufflers it sounds like a corvette when cruising on light throttle, not loud just the hint of potential. Anyway I think it will look great in the clipper and will change its personality to a street sleeper but not be extreme enough to
seem boy-racer-ish. Any thoughts are welcome.

Joe

Welcome Joe.

well, in answer to your first question, have a read!

The club is aimed at the standard/resto side of the MK1 as performance sites are already in existence. However, that does not mean that you aren't welcome as we do have owners of some heavily (and nicely!) modded cars here.

Where in the UK are you Joe? Post some pics if you can as I'm sure you'll be bombarded with comments and praise! Perhaps you can post a wav file too of that engine rumble! 8)

Hi Mate,

I have a modified Mk1 and I feel quite welcome here!
I am also looking to put a 16v in my car, though it will be running on carbs…
16v into Mk1's is a really common conversion so you will get loads of help and advice!

AL, that's good to know. Mechanical mods are to me totaly acceptable and the twin cam motor is very aesphetically pleasing, the 8v motor doesn't have that  visual quality about it. When I ran the 16v jetta it effortlessly left all traffic behind not that I was racing and you can stay in gear longer which gives it a great racecar feel. I like cars to drive exotically, near the red line and lots of gear movement and that's what twin cam motors have always been about.

Your carbs will sound like a racecar!

regards,

joe
