The cost of owning a golf?

Do you have to have a money tree or a highly paid executive type job to keep a mk1 on the road?
After spending over ?500 on the fuel system/wheels and tyres over the past week now the exhaust as gone.

Once you get everything done and paid 1000s you're OK for a while and can sit back and enjoy driving. Remember the youngest tin tops are now 22 years old so you have to expect the worst and hope for the best.

Helps to have a friendly bank……
After spending over ?3k in the first year of ownership of the GTI the bills since then have been ……..well, virtually nothing apart from oil, filters….
…and the Clipper drained just over ?1k in the first year, and has only had new top mounts and one tyre since……

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

I have the awnser,be a mechanic like me,most of the cost is labour,it has cost me 235 quid for the following-
New fuel filler neck Thanks crazyquiff
4 new Boge shocks
4 new suplex springs
2 front wheel bearings
2 rear wheel bearings
2 FAG wheel cylinders
Pagid shoes
2 new brembo drums
and a can of black hammerite to paint the wheel arches whilst all stripped.
Parts are cheap for mk1 :D ,just the fitting :( ,especially at a garage.

the key to keep the cost of any car done is to do as much as you can your self therefore saving the cost that the garages load on. when i had my scooby the local main dealer was over ?40 an hour so imagine going there every 3 months for a oil change 8O .
DIY is the way forwards :y:

I find the best trick is to not think about the amount spent.. that way when you pay ?100 one month and ?90 the next, it doesn't feel so bad!

Think you either need to do your own spannering or have a very well paid job. Unfortunately haven't got the latter, so have to opt for the former. Garage labour is always very pricey and often (unless a specialist) don't do as thorough a job as you can do yourself.

Just picked up car, another ?80 for front exhaust pipe including fitting. Car is a way lot smoother and quieter than before and not making an annoying crackling noise when de-accelerating plus all the rattling.
Wifes not happy about the cost of running the car and gave me the option of either the car goes or she goes…
Her next question was, "Why you packin my clothes up I like your car I was only jokin" and then said "Are we goin to Knutsford on Sunday"

Nice one Dj, glad u got your priorities right!!

I tend to forget about the cost and just smile if I have a month without a large bill!! Mine always seems to breakdown when I'm too busy to fix myself and have to pay a garage - I hate that!

Having recently moved house and also getting married at the end of Sept, I can say that running old Golfs is comparatively dirt cheap. Like Hairy finding the time can be a big problem??.

I gotta agree on them being overall fairly cheap cars to run. This is despite having had to pay out for a few expensive items recently!

If you compare it with running even a relatively new small car the costs (if you do your own maintenance) are very reasonable. Plus you don't usually have to contend with the biggest money sapper - depreciation, and you don't usually pay much for the cars in the first place.

Having owned several so called "classic" cars now the pattern is becoming eerily familiar. No matter how carefull you are with buying the first year of ownership is usually the one that involves the most wallet pain 8O . This is the time when the things you weren't able to check before buying tend to give up or it fails its MOT on a few things.

After the first year you gradually start sorting the major problems and generally the running costs are very low.

The other big plus with these cars is the amazing spares availability and the fact that prices for spares are kept very low by the likes of GSF & Co.

I think you have to look at Mk1 ownership as a longer term prospect, as it takes a while to get things as you like them. The thing I like about them is they are a great drive, look very distinctive and really are very simple mechanically.

Anyway, back to my brake replacement task - deliberating whether to remove the back axle and refurb it while I am there doing all the brake lines and flexi pipes too….. ho hum, good job I find this mechanical stuff strangely theraputic
