Speed Bumps...

Hi All,

I'm looking for some advice as a long term fan and prospective owner of the beautiful Mk1; my daily commute involves at least 10 sets of speed bumps, the red middle of the road kind that you either straddle or have to aim for the gap in between.

My question is whether this will wreck the splitter on a slighly lowered Mk1 and whether it means using it for my daily commute is possible. I remember the nightmare my brother had with his M3 and woud hate to have to wreck my pride and joy.

Any & all advice welcome - and if anyone happens to be willing to part with a nicely restored mars red s2 on split rims I'd be very interested.

Cheers
Phil

Add 5-10 mins to your journey time. Should be okay if taken slowly enough.

How much will you be lowering by? Presumably a GTI? I've lowered mine about 60mm at the front, equivalent to a 40mm drop for a GTI and I have a small front spoiler. I go over the sort of 'straddle' bumps you're talking about and have never scraped the sump, which is probably a good indication that a large GTI spoiler wouldn't catch. I think the sump's lower than the bottom edge of a large spoiler. Could be mistaken. I do about 20mph over them, and that's usually the signposted speed limit on streches with speed bumps like this anyway? I must admit though, 10 sets of the things would annoy me, twice a day, all week.   Like Paul suggested though, if you wannabe low, you've gotta go slow…sometimes.
