NO V5 OR REG. PLZ HELP!!!!

im looking at buying a mk1 which has no v5 or reg plates on it and has been off the road for a while. the only info i have is the chassis number. Can anyone tell me how i would go about finding out the reg of the car or how to do any checks from the chassis number on the vehicle. i tried to do a vin check online and it just said invalid vin, could be cause it not been on road for a while?? i phoned dvla and they told me without a reg they couldn't do anything and vw and the police won't tell me anything because of data protection. anyone got any suggestions?

TBH I'd give it a wide berth, no V5 or number plates  8O  8O Sounds a bit dodgy to me

I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines :o

Kinda raises more suspicion if it's a clean straight motor. Is it a complete car or just a shell??? Does the person in possession of it have a bona fide reason for no V5 or number plates?? Who is the registered owner???

the car is just a shell, the guy said he bought it for a restoration project with no v5 and doesnt have time to complete it, he said he had done checks on it with dvla and they said it has to be reregistered, dont know how hes done this cos they were no help to me at all! just thought id try and do some checks on it myself to be sure and your right its looking very suspisous!!!!

Ive just bought a mark one with no V5 or reg plates and was in the same predicament as you.
What I have done is contacted VW in germany as they hold a record base and they confirmed the VIN as correct because when I done an online check it kept on saying it was incorrect.
I then contacted the DVLA with the letter from VW and a letter explaining the situation(it had been off the road for ten years and used as a track car only) and they(after a lot of questions) told me the reg.

If the vehicle has ever been registered in the UK then the DVLA can tell you the Reg from the chassis no; they did with mine. If the vehicle has been de-registered due to accident damage etc they will tell you that you can't put it back on the road.

I bought mine as an unfinished restoration project, the owner had stored it for years in a barn, put a fresh battery on it and it caught fire. For some strange reason he then chose to de-register it and left it in the barn for another few years.
It didn't really matter for me as I only ever planned to use it on the track so it is still without V5 or plates and gets trailered everywhere.

Not sure if you need the vehicle Reg to apply for a new V5.

at least it has a VIN, if that was missing i'd worry, but you should be able to get somewhere with a chassi number, VW might help if you have a friendly parts man :)
