New Cars............

Just thought I would stick this up and see what you think?????

We got our Golf back yesterday after being MOT`d, and after fearing
the worst, it passed just needed a fog light bulb, 79p + the MOT and
a bit of labour for the checking over before the test.
It does need a bit of work before the next MOT according to the Mechhanic, brake lines, CV rubbers etc.. etc.. but nothing I can not do
myself., bearing in mind its 23yrs old it aint too bad really, its not a
show car, and it isnt even garaged.

Our "newish" car`s, require endless amounts of bits n bobs doing for
MOT`s, and the servicing is a nightmare, Pollen filters, service interval
lights that need turning off, airbag warning lights that keep blinking
etc  etc.. . and you can`t even sort these bits out yourself unless
you are mechanic, or know how to turn off service lights, or work for VW!.

Is it me or are new cars a pain in the backside?, dont get me wrong
I can`t do without my newish cars (2hrs on M1 every day) to work.
But I think they are getting just a bit too complicated!, what do you think?.

Moaning over!

off to wash the Golf…………………

I have a '99 Astra TD as a family car.  Its a more relaxed drive, esp over long distances, but we recently had to pay a massive 370 quid for full service!!!  As you said, its pollen filters etc etc, and the damn engine light is always coming on, for no apparent reason!!!

Just got the 83 GTI serviced for a meer 70 quid  :D

Yep, I don't like 'new' cars at moment. About to sell my beemer and heater fan has failed. Going to cost total of ?420 ish + VAT to replace!! 8O

I found with this car it went through a 6 month period of everything failing and needing replacing -  a mechanic mate of mine said a lot of cars after about 4 years old (from memory!) have a spell where loads goes wrong, then they're ok for another 4-5 yrs or so!

At least I can service my Golf. Just think in years to come when current new cars are on the 2nd hand market and people want to do DIY maintenance, you wont be able to do much yourself cos of all the computers etc!!

Historically, you can summarise fuel/air like this:

Carburettors
Simple fuel injection
Electronic fuel injection

And ignition:

Points, distributor, coil
Breakerless, distributor, coil
Electronically managed, coil packs

The third of each is where the problems will lie. Initially, manufacturers went their own way and developed their own interfaces for service/diagnostics. (More recently, there has been standardisation in the interface). This means that the manufacturer keeps a 'tie in' between the car and the servicing, an issue which was recognised and acted upon by the OFT and other European bodies, hence the standardisation.

When the numbers of 80s and 90s cars dwindles, manufacturers may not necessarily keep the machines which they need to be connected to, to diagnose the inevitable faults which will develop over time.

So, this could mean that Mk1s outlive all the other Golfs!
