The 1.6 injection engine was purely a development of the existing VW/Audi carb engine of the same capacity. In 1982 VW increased the displacement to 1.8 and reprofiled the piston crowns. Not much increase in power but more torque and developed at lower revs. Finding a decent body and a vehicle that has not been messed with will save you more money in the long run than the difference in insurance between the engines. The 1.8 is a bit less tiring to drive and has better fuel consumption but that is not to say the 1.6 can't be used as a daily driver.

Good luck with the search

Basically, They early Gti's were 1.6, they then upgraded to 1.8.
1.6 were available as 4 then 5 speed too. Not too sure of the years, though someone will confirm…

To be honest, if you are young, I think either will kill you on insurance. Theres not much between them.

im 21, ive had renault 1916v's in the past, but i crashed me last one, so i lost all me no claims, ive been driving around in a 1.4 clioRT for a while which ive had to sell, but cos my insurace dont run out till december, i just need to swap it over, they want and extra 175quid to swap it over to the 1.6GTi, which aint bad bearing in mind that they want 49 quid just for the admisistration charges, ie just to change the the details on my cover notes etc, i dont thik its that bad for 4months more insurace on a far a more stylish car, but you have got to remember its 200cc more than the 1.4 clio aswell.

anyway ill have anonther 1 years NCB and ill be 22 in december and ill inusre it with a clasic car insurance place, then i doubt it'll be 500quid 3pft,
just on the look out for a smart 1.6gti now then,
cheers for the info
alex.

'Do it! Go on.. Do it'  8) If you find a nice 1.6, check the gearbox code.. FD is close ratio and the one to have IMO.. every gear pulls like it's 2nd (apart from 1st obviously)

But at the end of the day.. 1.6 or 1.8 and not forgetting the smaller engined carb models which would be cheaper on insurance and can still go well.. a Mk1 is still a Mk1 and you'll look like   behind the wheel!

Does anyone know if the increase from 1.6 to 1.8 was acheived by bore or stroke?

blocks are same height so must be bore :dontknow:

The height of the block isn't the only factor in the stroke - the throw of the crank can be different, altering the length of the stroke of the pistons.

The 1800 engine has both a bigger bore, and a longer stroke (different crank throw)

For insurance, give Peter Best classic insurance a call (Google it). They're very cheap and should give you calssic insurance regardless of age.
