how fast do you drive yours ?

i just love pottering around in the mk1, mostly sitting at 55mph everywhere  8O , but i still get them chav type people ripping up behind and wanting a race ,why do they do that ? they see a gti badge and they think game on ! surely when they see a car thats over 20 years old in mint condion  they must know im not going to crash it for the sake of wipping a novas bottom   i just get work them out.
but when im out in the evo they dont want to race then wounder why that is ????

I have to admit to usually giving mine a good caning whenever I take her out, once she's properly warmed up of course.

Mine just doesn't seem to want to pootle about! Got the 160bhp, sports suspensioned 18 incher Audi A4 TDI for that…    8)

Cheers,

Drew.

I bought a new Impreza WRX a few months ago and thought it was great, but I've just washed my mk1 today and had it out round town and it makes my Impreza feel so un-interesting to drive.

Saying that, at least I know I'm gona stop, sometimes the mk1 lets you worry a bit before it decides to stop!!!!! That's why I tend to potter around too like 'susan-and -noddy'.

I do tend to give a bit of the old beans

Thats what its there for after all!

Unless its really fecking cold or wet in any way then I get a hell of a lot more pedestrian, I'm not happy with the cornering ability of mine quite yet (coilies set up really high due to scrappage probs, crap tyres etc)

I tend to potter about in mine too as the gearing is so low compared to a newer car. I can't resist the temptation to floor it every now and again though - The induction roar is soooooo nice!!!

Most of the time (eg to and from work, around town) I just potter around like any other road user. Come the weekend, or a long trip on some A and B roads and I like to give my car a bit of a thrashing! That's the whole point of the Mk1 GTI imo - no point having one if you aren't going to exploit it fully!

I do a lot of driving on rural A roads and it's just so hard not to want to drive the golf quickly! A lot of the time I find I put my foot down a bit and am surprised how fast I actually end up going for so little effort.

how fast

I love driving to meets like GTI inters earlyin the morning on A roads and thrashing it when no one else around. Bliss. I've got a mk2 16 valver as well but it's nowhere near as much fun, cept on motorways. Anyone else feel the same?
