Sods law, may be you can pick up a cheap windscreen at the scrapper. If you are travelling to Manchester I know of two screens in the local scrapper.

That sounds cheap, is that price including the glass?

On this subject, does anyone know of a tool that can remove car glass rubbers without damaging them and the glass.

I want to replace the clear glass out of the Mars Red GTI with the green tinted glass from the Lhasa green one I am breaking. Simple to cut the rubbers but don't want to do this obviously.

I shall make enquiries anyway but if anyone knows how to do it without suffering the same fate as Mr Gti then please let me know   .

Mine came out by levering up the lip from the inside with a wide blade screwdriver. Most of the ?seal? is on the outside keeping water out, so you get about half way round and the glass and seal almost drop out.

Putting it back is the problem, I?ve done Minis before on my own but they had a chrome strip in the seal that gives you a bit of play until you insert it after the window is fitted.

I got a professional to put all the glass back in the GTI as he was also supplying the new front screen and he struggled a lot so I?m glad I wasn?t doing it! The rear quarters and hatch glass seemed a lot more difficult than the front screen.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

It's best to have two of you i've always found. One inside, lifting the inner rubber up and pushing slightly and the other outside to catch the window! I've managed to take out and replace all the windows in mine, although I left the rear screen to the spray shop as they had sprayed the sticker back onto the boot lid.
Putting them back in isn't too bad, you need some strong but fairly thin electrical wire (thats what I used) or string. Definately need to people for that. You can apply a fair bit of pressure to the outside while someone inside is pulling the wire/string, so the inner rubber lip is being lifted over the window seam.
As for tooling, I made up a kind of wooden pallet knife style thing, wider than a screwdriver and safe!! Works a treat.

the flater the glass the easier it is, i've done all my glass before this accident inc rear window (easiest) and rear sides, the reason the front is so difficult is becasuse it curves in two directions also if the rubber is new as mine was it makes it twice as hard
two people is always better but you can do it on your own removal  is best with two one inside using their feet (clean trainers are best) and one ouside to catch - always push near the edges
This sounds extreme but works well with out cutting the rubbers
Yes the price is right in fact i've managed to get it cheeper still by ringing around ?65 inc glass 'n fitting but + VAT same for plain and tinted glass.
i'm getting plain as thats how my car left the factory i know its not concourse but nice to keep it original.

I've taken out the glass many times on my mk1 and put it back, really its an easy job! 1 minute to take the glass out, all you do is push the glass from the inside and peal back the lip. To put the glass back put plenty of washing up liquid around the rubber put the string round, put the bottom in first and pull the string gently on the inside. I've done the job many times on my own, easy !!!!!!!!

the windscreen fitter said this was the most awkward windscreen he's ever fitted. it took him about  hour an a half to do it all because of the rubber seal was so tight This was brand new and from vag so be warned if fitting a new seal - no wonder i broke the first one
