I think the policy on not dealing with modified Golf 1's is going to end up being changed.  Are you going to remove the posts by anyone who even mentions the subject?  I bet there are more modified Golf 1's remaining than standard ones, especially the GTI versions.  How about a campaign (small C) to promote the South African CITI and encourage more people to import them?

Crasher,

I don't think the plan is to omit modified questions.  I think the point is that generally the focus is on standard cars - if people want to dicuss mods then so be it.  There is a section specifcally for that.

Rich is right!

If you look at the old forum, there are questions about modding - and certainly no policing of posts. However, the forum seems to naturally steer itself in the direction of more standard cars due to the people using it. If I want to put sub-woofers and amps in my boot, with a few spoilers and mesh grilles to match, I would come here in the first place!

If you look at other forums - heavily into modding for example, you wont see many questions about originality but I'm sure they wouldn't be erased!

Seems amazing to me that people are concerned that modified cars won't be covered here, what with the 30+ major websites devoted to them out there plus all the mod and performance oriented clubs that exist!!!

Anyway…we're very happy to welcome modified Mk1s, it's just not the primary focus of what the club will be about. There are plenty of other places people can go for the in depth modified scene.

We're filling a big gaping hole at the other end of the spectrum, for those people who want to look after their mk1 in standard trim or get it back that way, with an eye on the future classic status of the car.

An owners club's primary purpose is to preserve as many examples of the breed in original condition as possible, and provide their owners the support to keep their cars going - my view anyway.

In the past the audience has been pretty much self selecting anyway. People into standard and restoration stick around, as do people keeping the basic car intact with a few well chosen modifications. Those wanting 17" wheels, underfloor lighting, body kits,  and huge engine transplants generally don't find what they want and move on.

Personally I don't believe in overt moderation, as long as the club retains its family orientated style and welcoming style. I've certainly no intention of deleting 'modified' posts.

In summary, all mk1s are welcome here, but what we will be offering will suite some owners better than others.

Cheers,

Drew.

I agree with the comment that there are lots of sites which cater for the modified scene and i for one have a heavily modified mk1 and read all the usual mags and attend the shows, sprint it, tune it and continue to mod it BUT since i acquired my 78 spec GTI i realised what i had missed in driving the original hot hatch, unmollested and damn good fun! but more than that, these are a dying breed and in my opinion, the ones which are left need to be kept that way. Standard is the new modified.

I have a very highly (but subtley  ) modded '74 Golf. I was proud to get best Mk1 award with it at the Edition 38 show earlier this year. I like to think it is not your typical modified Golf and the components are mostly all original VW (wheels and Webers excepted), not some aftermarket crap that you often see. If there is anything I need for mods I use other forums like Club GTi, etc which cater for this.

I agree with the posts so far, that there is a specific section in this forum for comments/help on mods which makes it easier to filter out the right information. This club's aim is about restoring and running standard Mk1s and meeting like-minded people but if you want to modfiy then that's fine too! Hell, what counts as a mod these days, a rear window sticker and a set of carpet mats? A non-VW air filter?

As for the SA Mk1, I think its up to VW and the importers to promote it in the UK. Its for us to persuade the other half's to get one as a daily driver

Well, I'm going to say it. I have and will continue to modify my golf, even though it was bought completely standard. I am upgrading stuff to how VW should have made it (in my opinion). For exmaple, headlights that actually illuminate the road at night. And a stereo worth listening to.
I will not be adding anything made by foliatec though…. if I was into that I'd have a paxo.

Keep it real

I picked up my modified mk1 just over a month ago now and i dont think the guy who was selling it didn't realised that they are a classic. It had MK 2 big bumpers on and a massive backbox which i have removed and replaced with mk1 stuff. Now these cars have started to go up in value surely its more sensible to keep them slightly looking standard for resale and insurance purposes. I just need the wheels and I'll be there but thats gonna be in the new year now coz I've run out of money.
Just wish I had the money like some of the guys on here :(  .

mk1 silver campaign totally standard lowered on coilovers magic tree vanilla

Just had a full outer body restore

I think Matt pretty much summed it up for me, and whilst I am into originality I will probably hang on to the H4 headlamp conversion on my car, and even after I have returned the suspension to stock I may well add a bottom brace to the front to improve the handling.

For me, sympathetic mods that improve the standard car without changing its essential character are fine. My general guideline is that as long as its reversible / removable then whats the harm?

This is one of the reasons I am going for using the stock speaker locations in the car, but upgrading the speakers and head unit - It will keep the car looking original whilst allowing me vastly improved listening enjoyment over the circa '83 standard fit audio, which lets be honest would sound pretty crap these days. Thats not to say if I came accross and original head unit I wouldn't put it to one side - its always nice to have all the original bits for your car, even if you don't use them  :D

I don't think anyone here is on a crusade against modded cars, its just as Drew said there are many sites out there that cater for heavily modded cars already. The focus of this site is more on preserving the breed and offering people information and advice about restoring their cars and keeping them going, with an eye to originality.

Quite a few regulars on here own both very standard cars and fairly heaviy modded cars. I think the distinction I would make is that even the heavily modded cars people have on this site are done very much in sympathy with the original Mk1 design ethos - not just slapping huge rims on it, dumping it in the weeds and wiring up Blackpool illuminations underneath
