Indirectly….

The fuel pump whines when its starved of fuel - either by running out of fuel (doh!) or by a blockage, typically rust/dirt in the system. If its left for long enough, continual blocking of the fuel pump like this will trash it.

later cabs have much larger filters on than earlier gti`s, dont think it can harm having better or more room for filtration, probably an after thought & more room for all the rust that vw know would end up in it when the filler neck rotted out!!
