Fuel Pump Confusion...

Post

Hi,

Forgive me if this sounds like a bit of a dumb question…
I'm a little confused as to which type of Fuel Pump(s) I should have on my particular model (Mk1 Clipper, 1.8 Carb) and wondered if somebody could clear this up for me?

After a quick inspection of the car, I can only find a mechanical fuel pump bolted to the engine block. Is this right or should be there be another pump at the tank end of the car also?
I have read various topics regarding pumps and their locations and was half expecting to see a pump at the rear of the car but can't see anything.

The current sender unit in the tank has feed and return hoses attached but no lifter pump, and there is no fuel pump connected to either of these hoses in the tank vicinity.
Is this setup right or am I missing something?

no thats correct, carby cars just have the mech pump on the engien and nothign at the back. fuel injection cars have a lifter pump inside the tank after 1984

Hi guys, my car was originally a 1.4 carb cabriolet 1983, it has since had a 1.8 injection conversion with the fuel pump in the engine bay by the offside wheel arch. However, it has the same fuel sender unit as your photo and doesn't have a swirl pot inside the tank.

On sharp corners with less than half a tank of fuel, it splutters. Any ideas on what I need to do to fix this?

Does it have an external swirl pot somewhere that I would need to change?

2 choices!
1. change the fuel tank for mk1 gti type and move the fuel pump back under the car where it belongs

2. fit a lifter pump in the tank and a fuel reservoir somewhere before the main pump. again move the fuel pump back where it belongs!

I have a similar issue on my GTI.  My car has always been a GTI.  When I take a sharp right hand bend with less than half a tank of fuel the car splutters.
