Bad fuel pressure?

Bad fuel pressure?

I've been trying to locate a running problem with my DX engine for ages now. When i first start the car it will run quite fast, then after about 2 minutes it will slowly lose power and eventually stop. I've done a million and one things to try and sort this, too many to mention. The last remaining check I haven't done is to check the fuel pressure is correct (mainly as the tool to do this is very expensive and I don't know anyone who has one to borrow).

Firstly, does anyone have any suggestions on what this problem might be, bearing in mind I've checked breather pipes, timing, inlet manifold, adjusting the mixture. Could the fuel accumaltor be something to check?

Secondly, if the fuel pressure is worth checking, does anyone know where i can get the tool cheap or know the whereabouts of one that i can borrow/hire?? :banghead:  :banghead:

might be worth checking your fuel pump, there's a filter in the inlet side which can get blocked

I followed a pipe out of the tank which ran directly into what I think is the fuel pump. It is situated underneath just in front of the back wheel on the drivers side, I took this pipe off and found no filter at all...could this mean i was looking at the wrong thing?? It also had a positive and earth connection on it...

is there much play in the injectors i.e can you wiggle them quite a lot?

no they are all pretty snug, i recently replaced the injector rubber seals anyway, so they should be ok

what about the idle screw in the back of the throttle body

mine did this a while age and it was unmetered air getting into the engine causing it to be tuned up running lean so it fired up to 1300 -1400 rpm and then gradually dropped and dropped till it stalled

nope your right, that'll be the pump

it does sound like not enough fuel or unmetered air

i haven'tmade any adjustment to the idle screw on the throttle body, is this something that can easily fail or be knocked out of it's setting?? if so how can i check to see if it's working correctly??am gonna have a look tomorrow morning…

had mine fall out on a dual-carriage way.. wouldn't idle at all and made a funny whistle (almost like a stratching sound)

really easy to get to.. it the 7mm bolt on the very back of the throttle body, it's held in with a rubber washer

not sure if it's a good idea but might be worth wrapping it in tape and seeing if it makes any running difference, that way you haven't moved it if that's not the problem  :dontknow: might work might not

Mixture of beer and friend's birthdays meant nothing got done to the car over w/end so haven't done any checks.
did have one constructive chat in the pub though…someone suggested i look at the WUR. i've done a check with my meter on this before but it produced readings specified in the haynes, so does that mean it's all working ok? also, i might need to check the supply and return lines for the fuel, does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this (safely)?

cheers

finally got my fuel pressure test kit from a dealer in the U.S. today (specifically for the bosch k-jetronic system, cost me $90, if anyone interested i can forward the company details).
did the checks as listed in the haynes manual. couldn't get it to start with the tap closed, so did a cold test with wiring to WUR and auxiliary air valve removed. the reading was well under..i'm assuming this points to a faulty WUR? anyone got advice on where i go from here?

maybe youre fuel accumulator is not working properly, it should maintain the system pressurised when the ignition is turned off to avoid vapor lock.
I can look up in my haynes if you need to know the right pressure.

just tried prowler's injector test. looks like 3 out of 4 are knackered so will get those replaced before i go any further…if no joy then will look at the accumulator.
anyone got advice on whether i should buy 2nd hand or new injectors?? got a quote for new ones of ?30 plus VAT each one..?

fitted 4 2nd hand injectors and seemed to get them all working yesterday. running was still a bit out so had a look at the return fuel line to check if accummulator is faulty. amount of return fuel is well below so a new accummulator will be bought next….
a new problem has now come up…there's no fuel getting to the injectors now!! fuel is getting as far as the outlet end of filter but that's as far as it goes. could i have caused some sort of air block by checking the return line??? can't work out why the fuel isn't reaching the injectors… :dontknow:  :banghead:

ps also checked the power going to the fuel pump, initailly was full 12v and then drops to nothing, this shouldn't happen should it?
