Starter Motor removal on 1.5 1982 Auto

Hi all, struggling to get access to my starter motor on my '82 1.5 auto. Do i really have to remove the inlet and exhaust manifolds??!! Or is there an easier way? Many thanks! Stuart

Did the starter on my '89 1.8 auto a few months ago and it is a bit of a mare to do (everyone with manual boxes going 'what's the problem?' ), however I managed to avoid moving the inlet or exhaust.

The procedure is in Haynes, albeit briefly so note the following:
Definately follow their tip of disconnecting the R/H driveshaft - you'll need a star shaped key to go on a ratchet to remove the bolts
You'll then need to remove the heat cover from the starter - one end has a bolt that's easy to remove but the other has a large jubilee clip which you will struggle to get a screwdriver to, I used an 'L' shaped bit of metal to undo it
Beware that once you take the 3 bolts holding the starter to the gearbox you'll need to support it whilst disconnecting the 2 wires that go to the top of the solenoid.  As one of these goes straight to the battery it's worth disconnecting the battery to avoid sparks!  8O

Took me 5 hrs of arm aching graft so good luck  :y:
