This is a common fault with the clocks . But could also indicate !

Providing your coolant is topped up and the fan cuts in when hot and the car does not overheat ,  don't worry i looked in to this problem along with other users and found despite replacing temp senders , coolant senders etc that the clocks were to blame . Replacement is the cure . Great except you can't get them   8O  New only  used items .

But thats not the end of it ! You must make sure before you blame the clocks all the above + you are using the correct anti freeze mixture and that the water level is on the Max mark . And you have checked all coolant senders and level indicators by replacing them .

Cheers ………..

hi there! i also have mk2 ce2 dials installed in my mk1. i have the same problem and still im trying to figure out the annoying coolant level light flashing after a year of research. did you fix yours? what did you do? i had all the wires checked, relays and sensor. used the same cluster with a different auto and it worked fine. thanks! - jtec

I have done a few MK2 in to MK1 clocks now and never had this issue ? Oil buzzer and light yes .

Make sure you have no xtra relays as per this The Mk1 Golf Owners Club

This could also be something to do with the coolant sender [on the head] it may need a slightly different type [resitive] ? To give the clocks the right signal .

My conversion uses a 20VT sender from the 1.8T engine  :dontknow: Perhaps the later MK2 had a different sender ? My temp guage reads slight high at normal running but the bulb has never flashed

Worth a look at , senders are cheap .

You could also remove the coolant bulb ! It wont flash then .

Just a daft suggestion, Check the coolant level sender - my missus Cabby temp gauge started flashing intermittently  after finally getting the whole dash to work - turned out to be just the coolant level!  Not checked the operation of the switch, but might be worth disconnecting and putting to open/closed circuit and seeing if that changes the symptoms………….

i finally found the solution. the CE2 cluster has a built in coolant level relay. i just connected the sending unit directly to the mk2 CE2 cluster coolant level wire and now it works fine. :) thanks guys!
