Possible MFA Solution

Read this on a web site….could be of interest

:D  Let me know if it works

The classic hot hatch is notorious for problems with the trip computer. A modern feature for its time, the GTi was fitted with a gizmo that tells you lots of journey information including time, mpg and temperature. After many years of faultless service, these computers tend to suffer from an electronic 'hiccup'.

Instead of displaying the usual range of trip information, the tiny screen either shows just some horizontal lines at the bottom or it goes completely blank.

This same 'hiccup' also often occurs if the battery is flattened or disconnected. Instead of displaying the usual range of trip information, the tiny screen either shows just some horizontal lines at the bottom or it goes completely blank! In the worst case this will mean a replacement unit but there is also a quick fix worth trying (you will need a happy helper for this job):

ALWAYS TAKE CARE WHEN DEALING WITH BATTERIES/ELECTRICS
Disconnect the battery.
Hold down the MFA button.
Reconnect the battery.
While still holding down the MFA button, turn on the ignition, release the button and turn off the ignition.
Hold down the MFA button again, turn on the ignition and release the button.

You should now have a correctly working display. It has been known for the display to jump into life halfway through the process. If this happens, you can congratulate yourself and stop right there, for it has been known for the computer to 'hiccup' again if the process is continued after it comes back to life!

My MFA has a slightly different problem, I have the clock display up fine but when you press the button in on the stalk it just stays as the clock and will not cycle through.

Any Ideas really appreciated

The clock is not frozen and can be adjusted to the correct time!

Maybe it's worth me getting a new switch from the scrap yard and giving that a go? I have traced all the wires and everything seems to be connected.

Thanks for your advice, if there are any more suggestions I would be glad to here of of them
