Points conversion to Solid-State Electronics?

As title states i want to do away with my points and condensor as im having an unbelivably hard time trying to source the right points :( Im pretty sure i have a Lucas Distributor but according to someone with a lot of know how- Lucas were never fitted to MK1s (mines an 83 1.3 CL on a GF engine code)

SO perhaps im wrong but having been sent the wrong points 3 times now (VW insist its a Bosch one but it isnt!)

im at my wits end. i know lumenition do a kit (or did do a kit) but i can tget in touch with them  :( can anyone suggest an alternative supplier as ive spoken to 2 autoelectricians who said they didnt know anything about it, ive spoken to countless mechanics and the like and motorfactors etc and nobody so far can help me :(

Loz.

Please don't call me fella- its deeply insulting to one whom is no such thing! ;)

Don't think it is as simple as that Loz - Think you'd need to change your dizzy anyway to go down that route???

Where did you go to get your points? I'm sure GSF or similar will be able to provide - Why did you have them "Sent"?

There is not much to points, you could probably mod them to fit if they are close enough?

Hi al. aprantly you can get something tat acts in the same way as your condensor and points wouldthat simply goes in its place!

try this link for something similar to what i need www.hot-spark.com the points that have been ordered for me by VW, and my my local motor factors and a mechanic are like these:

which isnt what mine take :(
all ic an do is hope that my mate whos a decent mechanic on older cars can clean them up long enough for me to run it til  can get hold of this conversion kit and pay an autosparky to fit it!

I don't know if this page is any help.

http://www.classicheads.com/Electronic_Ignition.html

I know it's aimed more at the classic and vintage market, but there's no reason why it shouldn't work on a mk1, it does say down the bottom they can custom make a kit for your distributer.

To just replace the points you need the lumenition optronic ignition kit. I have this on my V8 Land Rover. It basically consists of a an led and photodiode, they call a "magic eye" that fits inside your dizzy. Then some connection between the coil, "magic eye" and the "box of tricks" that does the fast switching of the LT circuit to induce the spark in the coil. Its a pretty easy job to fit so long as you get the correct fitting kit for your dizzy. Try this link for authorised retailers. Autocar will not sell direct. home - AUTOCAR
Once fitted its pretty maintenence free……

Unfortunitely you'll have to get the timing re-set if you get it converted to electronic ignition. Luckily a good garage shouldn't charge much to do it, as the ignition system on a mk1 is about as bog standard as you get, and therefore easy to adjust. Strictly speaking you should get it checked when you change the points anyway.

It should really be a Bosch Dizzy.

Take a PIC…

I have optronic on a MK1 with a 1985 MK2 1.3 Lump.

demon tweeks supplied the chopper kit no probs..

If the timing is right as it is then it should not change when fitting electronics. It may help to have it tweaked but it should still run fine.
