new mk1 - buzzing indicator relays

Just bought a new mk1 yesterday,

few little niggles tho.


***Buzzing Relay - I believe its the indicator relay as the buzzing noises stop when i use an indicator or put the hazards on. It also stops buzzing at random speeds.

3rd gear - under 30mph, 4th gear - under 40mph, 5th gear - under 50mph.

I have another 1600gti with an 1800gti engine, are the fuseboxes the same, should i try swapping the relays over or could it be down to a faulty earth.

*** I have no mirrors! the holes on the door have been blanked off i think so does anyone know where i can get clipon mirrors chrome or plastic

*** The heaters are pretty shit, my other mk1 at least forces out the air enough to clear the screen properly however this new car makes a pitiful attempt at blowing hot or cold hair. Is there a pollen filter in these cars, could it be the heater blower has gone (if this was the case would any air come through or just a very minimal amount)

*** Horn doesnt work - it did when i first got in the car but now its given up, i want to take the wheel off and replace with a boss and small aftermarket wheel so would i need a 22mm deep socket and which bits need pulling of fthe original stereo.

*** wipers are slow and pants and fail to clear the screen adaquetly over 60mph, would a single wiper conversion give better screen coverage and stay glued to the windscreen at high speeds.

Hmm lets see.

  • Buzzing relay - this is the oil pressure sensor. A fiendish arrangement of sensors for high and low oil pressure, coupled to fragile circuit boards that is supposed to prevent you damaging the engine if the oil pressure goes too high/low by making driving all but impossible due to the buzzing noise in the cabin. First step is to clean all the contacts and all the sensors, i.e.;
  1. Pressure sensor on side of engine block and wiring
  2. pressure sensor on oil filter housing and wiring
Then if symptoms persist - get someone to check the oil pressure. Alternatively (if you're flush) by a new oil pump, then at least you know that the engine is getting enough oil.

  • Clip on mirrors - you need mirrors? Drive faster….

  • Heater - all golf heaters are pants. It does sound like your fan isn't working though - in which case you'll need to start scrabbling around in the scuttle to get access to it to check whether it's working, and to check whether it's rubbing against the side of the fan housing (a common occurrence).

  • Horn - try viagra - sorts out most horn problems…oh…hang on - don't know - not changed by steering wheel recently. A Haynes manual should help.

  • Wipers - ahem…..they are not actually there to clean the windscreen - they are there to pass the MOT…..   but seriously - you can upgrade to a Lupo wiper motor if you want faster wipers - see the Golf+ article on their website.

hi guys,

bit of an update…

Got some chrome mirrors now, just got to fit them this weekend

sorted the buzzin relay, turns out it was just duff, so replaced and all is well.

horn isnt a problem but i believe its probably due to another duff relay as when pressing the horn, you can hear a relay click.

The dashboard is coming out this weekend and im going to tidy up all the wiring, got the leccy windows to wire up. may even pop the TT dash in there if im feeling adventurous

I've been toying with the idea of dropping another engine in the car as i have an 1800 gti engine that has had a reasonable amount of work done it very recently, headgasket, waterpump, timing belt etc. and the 1600i in her at the moment is looking rather tired and sounds like the tappets are going.

passenger side driveshaft also went yesterday and split all the bearings all over the floor so ill be replacing that on wednesday.

if anyone has a spare bootlock and matching key (or just the barrel and key) then i would be most grateful.

One other last thing, what is the best way to sort out a sagging door, all the door pins are fine and not rusting, i seems to be the lower locating pin that has room for movement, would placing a few washers on either side of the pin be beneficial or are there tried and tested ways for sorting the door sag,

I have the same buzzing issue with the relay. It is intermittent, and never is accompanied by the oil light. even with both sensor's wires grounded it can make it's noise and goes up and down with rpm … I'm pretty sure it is a wiring issue but have no idea where to start. Is there any way to just disable it?

It’s always nice to sort out the buzzing… I had a Buzz that I couldn’t find, drove me battyshitecrazy…. Ended up being my rear view mirror wasn’t tight to the button…. The sound came from the dash it was bizarre.

Test the horn itself.  If the Horn doesn’t work then we back up, but as the relay clicks then you have to find out where it is broken… With the relay click then you have a good ground to the steering wheel shaft from the steering wheel gearbox to frame, and the buttons on the wheel work, so you are looking at a ground or power issue to the horns.  The Horns have power to them full time, and you are switching grounds to them
So either your horns are bad (most likely) or you have a bad power (black/yellow) or a bad ground from the switch.

Good Luck, be sure that you insulate the single bare blue/black wire on the Hazard switch as that usually blows f19, and when you go back your turns only glow..blown fuse

I hate getting under a car for one thing and notice something else… I have 2 bad boots on my shafts…

Are you missing yours? or is it keyed wrong.  on www.cabby-info.com Kammy has a how to re-key your locks DIY.

Usually it is the Hinges where they are welded to the “a” pillar themselves that are tweaked a bit as they get bent when folks use the door to pry themselves out of the car.  :)  So you can remove the door and bend them straight, or you can Shim them with a washer, I have a how do I do that in the Archive section here under Briano’s 90ish car repair.  You can also use a good Pry on the hinge to bend it back as well.

Neither have I on a new to me car save for the ones I bought off the showroom floor.
But I have learned how to fix them.

Are you SICK SICK I say, this coming form a fellow that bought a new cabby to drive to work, and the Daughters ended up using it, so I had to buy another for me…. Every time I go to sell one of them, the kids wreck their car and have to drive the green one again…..so I always have one to tinker with.
 
For your heater a working heater in a Golf or Rabbit or Cabriolet will burn your posterior out of the car, so I suggest that you flush and back flush your heater matrix as you may have a plugged one, or the heater valve isn’t fully opening and may be bad.
 
If you have a weak Blower then that is a horse of a different color.
 
The Wipers work good, where I see them fail is that the Arms get weak, and or that you need to take them apart and clean the cruddy grease out of the mechs.  www,cabby-info.com has a link to a DIY on there.
 
I just make sure that my windscreen is clean and I use 3 coats of RAINex on it, and the wiper blades.  I have upgraded my blades to Rainex.
