MFA display dodgy

Hi there,
this is how my MFA looks

I've just changed the LCD thinking it was that…exactly the same.  Any ideas what's up?  Could it just need resetting like so…

my mfa on my old 1983 black gti was always a bit dodgy..
i cant remember how i found out about this little trick but i just found the little piece of paper with notes on how to jump start your mfa into life again..

first disconect battery
hold down mfa button
re-connect battery
turn on ign, release button, turn off ign
hold down mfa, turn ign on, release mfa

this doesn't work all the time but it has always been successfull for me eventually..
anyway hope this helps someone out there,
cheers, Rowan.

pull the fuse for 30 seconds, make sure you pull the right one the display should go blank! if that doesnt help try pulling the battery -ve cable off for 30 seconds. if that doesnt help your dash is bust!

clean up the dash earth though, its the one to the side of the head with a brown/white wire. make sure the earth from the head to one of the coil mounting bolts is there too. you could tap an earth into the dash wire direct to the chassis somewhere if in doubt

Ooooof that second bit went over my head ;)  I'm sure I'll get it when my heads under the bonnet!!!  Cheers for that (my thinking is it is the circuit board…all was ok until I decided to take the green out from the clock…damn my fiddling ways!!!)

they normally recover from this as John says with the power disconnected,, have you just brought them?
or are they from your car?

I stripped it back down and then replaced the LCD with one I bought from someone off here…as I originally just thought it was the LCD.  But as it displays the exact same faults as previously now trying other things.  I've tried the disconnecting power, tried the reset 'code' thing…I'll try going backwards and starting from scratch again checking each connection as best I can :)  As it seems like this is quite 'normal' for a fault I'll just keep playing and see what happens.  Thanks guys

I know this is an odd thread but does anyone know if this issue was ever remedied?

I've just replaced by screen with a used replacement as the old one had bled but still worked to a degree.

The new one looks identical to the photo at the top, sort of ghosted in the back ground.

I'd rather not strip the clocks again as I would rather of performed brain surgery on myself

I do have a 3rd screen I can try if needs be but be nice to know how they "sort themselves out"

Well in most cases missing segments either usually means to me that the Display to PCB connections are corroded weak, or it is the driver chip.

I would validate that my power and grounds are great, not good but Great.

I do think a new set of clocks are what it is going to take to fix it.  One remedy that I have seen work for me is to take the mfa out, clean the PCB with Alcohol, and were the contact mate if they are surface mounts you can usually get them toasts with a Hair-Dryer, or with a low wattage Princess Iron (smallest tip) hold for a second till you see the solder change, then do the oppossing side similar to head bolts, this way there isn't a lot of heat in a specific spot….

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.
