Lights on warning

Lights on warning

I'm forever leaving the lights on on my Campaign - think I'm too used to modern cars with warning buzzers!

Any leccy experts out there know if it's possible (& easy!) to fit some kinda buzzer to the MK1 to let you know your lights have been left on? I'm guessing you'd need some sort of relay as well as buzzer that is linked to ignition switch and lights switch - but I'm crap on this kinda stuff!

Hairy

Note on door handle, "TURN OFF LIGHTS". OK maybe not…

Take a lighting feed from your fusebox (I think 3rd spade down on the LHS looking from the back, Matt tells me M2) and connect to your favourite buzzer, 12V door chime…You will need a different door switch to the current one that will go to earth with door open and close the circuit when connected to the buzzer. I think you could pick up a buzzer and switch from a motor accessory shop.

Hi guys,

My brother put a door chime on his old Polo. He bought a kit from Maplin Electronics. I seem to recall it wasn't all that expensive and came with all the bits you need.

Don't know if they still do them though ???

Yup Maplin do the programmable kits so you can have any different chime you want!

M2 will not do it though as this is for headlights and headlights work off the X feed which is disconnected when you turn the ignition off. For +12v you'll need a feed for the side-lights… scotchlock onto b26 or b27 or e1 (number plate light).

I just took a 50p buzzer (house alarm exit warning, I think it was) and ran a wire to the back of the side light circuit on the headlight switch (the terminal which goes FROM the switch TO the side lights, so it's only live when the lights are on - haynes will tell you the terminal number)

The negative wire from the buzzer goes to the wire that leads to the door light switch on the driver's door.

Whern the lights are on the buzzer gets a positive feed, and when the door opens, the buzzer also gets an earth, and sounds.

The only problem with this simple circuit is that the buzzer also goes off if the passenger door is opened (dropping someone off at night), but hey it gives your passengers something to talk about…

PS: Do you guys really use scotchloks? - they slice throught the insulation and some of the copper strands in the wires, causing a weak spot, which eventually causes the wire to break up - I've had to solder the ends of lots of wires back together in my dash (radio) and in the boot (tow-bar socket) - I think that they are the cause of electrical gremlins in a lot of cars.

Agree with T17 - bin the scothblocks or whatever they are called - they'll cause you pain someday

I don't mind scotlocks when I want to do something quickly but I do agree for a long-term solution solder is the best way.
I would like to know if it is possile to get pins similar to those in the wiring loom connectors at the fuse box, then it would be possible to do proper factory-look electrical mods. Anyone know? Also what about the plastic bits that the extra relay and fuse mount onto above the board - are they available from anywhere?

I know this is an old thread, but I am looking to achieve exactly the same sort of 'lights on alarm', however I have read this thread, re-read it, and still don't really understand what I am looking for at Maplins (or alike)…
It sounds like it should be relatively straight forward to do, even for novice like me, and not expensive.
I have tried to search on Maplins site and all I can find is this:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?TabID=1&criteria=usb&ModuleNo=257320&C=SO&U=Strat15
(by the way these look fun, has anyone tried them?)

If anyone gets this reply and can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. (Like the idea of a silly noise…

Thanks

What you need from Maplins is something like this: Maplins 12v Buzzer (Search "12v Buzzer" for more choices.)

You'll need to extend the black wire on the buzzer a bit and you can tape the buzzer to the wiring loom for the headlight switch. I found the buzzer to be a bit loud, so I wrapped it in a paper towel to quieten it a bit.

Connect the red wire to either of the R58 terminals (R58R or R58L) on the rear of the headlight switch. This means that the buzzer gets a positive feed when the sidelights or headlights are on.

Connect the black wire to the terminal on the door contact switch in the driver's door A pillar. This means that the buzzer gets a feed to negative/earth when the door is open(ed).

The buzzer will only sound when the sidelights are on AND the door is opened.

You beauty, that was quick, thanks!

Now to find a similar 12v noise-making device with a silly noise…

You can fit a factory lights on relay from Seat's (ie Ibiza, cordoba, alhambra) etc. I got mine out of an Alhambra at the scrapyard and it plugged straight into my fusebox (late cabriolet).

See here for 'how to'

Can someone help me find this above mentioned 'How to' please? The link does not work for me and can't find it through search.

Thanks, I saw that one. Maybe I misunderstood him saying "it plugged straight into my fusebox (late cabriolet)", though I think someone else said it too in another thread. I think they were saying no wiring mods for a late cabrio, mine's a '91.
