Heater switch - I can fry an egg on it!!

Hi all,

I may be worrying needlessly but in my track focused MK1 the radio aperture is open so you can see and touch the heater fan control switch body.

I had the heater fan on high setting and during a run without looking while concentrating on the road I went to turn it down and accidentally touched it and it was seriously warm. I assume it acts as a resisitor in part so would be warm but because it is so warm I worry it may be breaking down and shorting out. It seems fine on the low setting (but still gets slightly warm) but on settings 2 and 3 it gets quite hot!

I may be a wuss but its a 28 year old car with 28 year old wiring and ancillaries and having had the indicator switch wiring catch fire a year ago due to poor contacts and a massive earth issue would it be a good idea to exhange it or is it completely normal?

Is it only the electrical switch that is getting hot or the whole area?

Also is it hot as soon as you turn it on or does it get hot gradually?

Can't say I've noticed this on mine but the heater controls in my old mk3 dizzle used to get pretty hot, I just assumed it was normal.
