Get a multimeter and some wire and check out if 12v is getting to motor and if the switch is working and check fuses etc. Run power direct from the battery to motor to check it. Once you are sure its the motor thats dead……..

Its been debated before but I've removed them from the engine side, 1st removing window wiper stuff 1st. Other say its impossible and removed the dash inc electrics and un-plumbing the heater matrix. I know which route I would try 1st.

heater

my heater packed in a few weeks ago on my daily driver ( gti cabby )thought at first it was the blower as it was a bit noisy before it stopped working. you know that squeky sound. so changed the complete blower unit ( from inside the car )
still it didnt work so changed the switch ( next to the slider controls ) now i have fully working heater again,
i suppose i could have just changed the switch in the first place and it would have been fine, but i would never have got around to changing the noisy blower unit so its not that bad, but yours may be a simple switch so check that first

Hi Terry. I tried to get it through the engine side and gave up! crazyquiff though said it can be done and you have confirmed again. Going to have a crack at it this w/e - out of interest did you fit a GSF unit or one from VW.

Did you get yours out on the driver's side behind the bracket for the wiper mechanism?

mine came from a donor golf , i split the unit and took it out on the passenger side then spilt the new one in half and put it back in from the passenger side, then reassembled the unit and put it in place.

blower

ah, so thats what people mean when they so they can change it at the front…
you can change half the unit
if you want to change the complete blower unit, can you still do it from the front ???

I am going to try and do it this weekend - the whole unit. Apparently it can be done - the tricky bit is getting it behind the bracket that the wiper motor clamps to. Anything to avoid doing it from inside the car!!

Its a while since I've done it and I remember it being a bit of a Kyrpton Factor challenge getting it out but must be a million times easier than dismantling half the interior of the car.  :dontknow:

I got it out complete, do I get prize

blower motor unit

i must be using some kind of strange motor units in my mk1's, as the hole under the wiper motor is way to small for a  heater motor unit to be taken out complete without taking it apart while its still in the car.
i can take all the components, dash , centre consul,  and put it back together again in an hour with ease. wouldnt like to even try to dismantle a heater unit while its in the car thru that little gap under the bonnet, perhaps im getting too old and dont fancy the thought of leaning over the bonnet putting my hands in a hole i cant even see properly.
