Alternator?

Alternator?

Since I've owned the car I've had problems with water leaking in filling the footwells and dripping onto the fuse box of all places so have had to replace the fuel pump relay that was full of water. I replaced the battery about six months ago for an expensive Bosch one. This made the car fire up effortlessly but after a few more water leaks it's dead again. I'm looking at getting this leak sorted but in the mean time I need to get the car running again. I've jump started it a few times and fires up great and runs nicely (apart from the bloody oil pressure buzzer and light coming on most of the time) but after a 40 minute drive I turn off the ignition and then go to restart and there's not a sausage there! I've had a look at the alternator connections and they don't look great to be honest. While removing the wiring connector it broke up so I'm in need of a new connector or loom between the alternator and starter/battery.

Could it be just the wiring, or more likely the alternator itself?

Anybody know where I can get a new connector or loom from?

I don't have a lot of time to spend getting these problems sorted and I'm desperate to get it running again.

Also, I was just wondeering if there are any alternators from newer VW's that would fit straight on?

Hi Andy,
first of all sort the leak out, is  it windscreen or the drain holes in the scuttle, they fill with leaves and muck?
You need to put a multimeter acroos the Bat terminals to see the voltage, with the car off and again with it running should go over 13V, no doubt that if that's wrong one of the Guys will correct me.

Just ask in the parts wanted forum for what you need.

MK2 golf 1.6-1.8 will swap over, take the battery cabling off the donor car too as it attaches differently to the alternator.

mk3 golf battery cabling is a good upgrade, take the rear engine -> gearbox mounting bolt with the stud on where the battery earth runs to. just you'll need to make up a chunky earth from the -ve to the mk1 chassis leg, you'll see what I mean.

you can go 1 step further and fit the alternator setup off an early 1.8-2.0 mk3 golf, you want the type with the massive spring under the alternator. take the alt, bracket, spring, fixings inc the ones on the block plus the crank and waterpump pullies.
