Restoring steel wheels

Post

I bagged myself a set of original wheels at the weekend, gave them a good clean and now thinking about restoring them, does Volkswagen use a specific paint code for their wheels like avus silver etc? I'd want to match the trims and possibly paint them too, has anyone done this before? Any heads up would be great image.jpeg image.jpeg

Does your 1990 have the 'Digifant II' fuel injection system?

If you can read the VIN then you can workout the month, week and day of the week yours was produced. I think the cabbyifo website explains how to read it.

So mine was something like, 1990, June the 19th, Thursday and was the 175th of the production line that week.

Mine was then first registered 08-08-1990.

As for parts, there are a fare few from the Mk2 included and that's why I asked about the injection system.

My engine and injection is the very same as the Mk2 GTI but with the power turned down to 98bhp.
All I have to do is re-chip it and hey ho but who needs the extra power in a Cabby!  ;)

Ahh I'll have to check that out! Does that mean yours has a catalytic converter? That would be a laugh I tuned the weber properly with a co meter etc to get it mixing right and emissions and I don't know if it made a difference in power but it does pull very well for an old car! Puts some of the newer stuff I get to drive to shame

Wheel update - didn't go in for refurb, well they did then i picked them back up!!! a Company in Cardiff called FLAT OUT ALLOYS agreed a price with me about 6 weeks ago, dropped them in this afternoon ok… stopped off with my daughter in a costa a mile or 2 on the way back, had a phone call to say about the price quoted, said they went through the 'conversation' & basically said they could see the price & 'will see you next week'… had another call off the boss i think then saying they couldn't do them at the price 'oh we can't do them for nothing'… 'we got to make something on them'… so i had to go back & collect them!! basically said i've been given that price as an ok & they would be happy to do them, the guy said it's just a quote & we can't do it… :dry:Not happy with a 60 round trip as well!! got all the conversation on 'Messenger' so i'm trying to contact some friends to see where i stand on this…

As far as your wheels go, what was the price difference between what you originally agreed and the final price?

That's odd for them to change the quote, can only see that being due to corrosion maybe they need acid dipping? What was the price? I had my 14 inch pirelli p slots dipped powder coated diamond cut then clear coat and that cost £60 a wheel, should give you a rough idea although diamond cutting is a bit more expensive

Hate use the classic but you do get what you pay for.

This is not easy because I doubt if they were trying to get one over one you as it's very bad for business.

The problem is with the management of the company and how they arrive at their blind quotes.

When car owners called me when I worked at a VW dealership and asked me how much is my car worth?
I would say, hold it up to the phone and I'll have a look.  O_o

We'd laugh and the owner would say, come on roughly?
My answer was simple. £1

What, the owner would scream.

That was the best for me because I had a few answers but the best was simple, bring it in and let me see and you will not be disappointed!

Business is business but you gotta know the recipe.

Not at lot of help but because you have lost time and money but the disappointment value is harder, well at least how I see it.

Apologies for the late response… spoken to a friend who's in the legal side of things & basically she said it's a Breach of Contract ( blah blah with the #) to what they have agreed to, with what was written & the phone conversation confirming it was their error… will be contacting them this week & see what their response is & go from there, i'm sure they'll like the bad publicity too… i know business is business but don't take the mick - to put it politely!! 'we gotta make some money' with their nice factory, New Transporter with a Private plate & a decalled Range Rover sport..  So conduct your business in a professional manner hey…. we shall see.. :|
